Skimmer Q&A Thread

Mojo,

Ive narrowed my skimmer choices down to three models for a high bio load 60G w/ 20L sump. Footprint must be within 9x12

Which would you go with if it were you :

1. Reef Octopus SRO1000SSS

2. Reef Octopus SRO1000Int

3. SWC 160 Cone

All ears for any other suggestions as well, thanks !

sro 1000 int is my vote. good bang for your buck.

any experience out there regarding the aquamaxx cone 3 series skimmers, ore JNS SK3, JNS SK5, JNS SK6 ore JNS SK7 skimmers

thy are fairly new, and cant find that much info on them

They are just like the am series but just a longer transition and the pumps use less power.

I always liked the jns products. Running one right now actually

which model and how do you like it so far, lol ive had current skimmer awhile and looking to play with another, gonna be hard to compete with current skimmer though

I just installed a SWC 180 cone and this thing rocks. The foam head is huge and it looks like a volcano preparing to spit out a lot of gunk. I replaced a straight cylinder skimmer with a cone collection cup which narrowed down to .75 inch before spilling into the cup. It seems to me that a high deep and wide foaming bubbles spewing through a 2" tube into a cup will produce a ton more gunk.

Great design, compact with pump under unit and easily disassembled for cleaning. Highly recommended!

do you think the 550G model could handel a 350 gal tank, growing SPS and some LPS, only 8 small fish and 3 tangs,

ore do you think I have to run 2 of them, ore go to the JNS 5, 6 ore even 7 model (cant even find where to get the 5, 6 and 7 model

well the 180 uses the psk2500 pump which can start backwards. The skimmer isnt bad design but all the swc skimmers now are going to injection molded parts over machined parts. just a inexpensive skimmer. I have owned about 7 swc skimmers. All worked ok. But nothing better than any other mid level skimmer.

glad you like yours, this is a q&a forum not a advertisement forum.

mojo I have a vertex n100 that I bought for my 75 now I find my self with a 90 instead will the n100 be way to small
Will a new pump make it handle the bigger tank if so what pump would match up best with this skimmer body.

The in 100 will still work fine. Once you get the 90 heavily stocked you could go to the 180. but I wouldnt ditch it just yet. keep an eye on everything

I think my latest question got lost in the shuffle...

What are your thoughts on a bubble blaster HY-1000 on a EuroReef RS-80? The Sedra on my skimmer is about to die. Can't find much in the way of the specs for either pump, the HY-1000 pulls 400-480l/h which I think is in the neighborhood of the Sedra I believe. Not sure if it would over power the RS-80. Then again, I'm not sure if I'm crazy about spending $130 on a pump for a skimmer that's not even worth that much.

Might upgrade to a SWC 150 BMK, but I've read that the atman pumps aren't that great. Also read that there are some issues with the Resuns on the Vertex IN-100. Not sure if I want to spend the money on a 160 cone or a SRO 1000sss...

the resun pump on the vertex is the same pump as a vertex, just different volute and attachments. i have a in100 and got a mini airstar pump for it and this thing is a monster. personally as much as i have loved the 3 or 4 rs80's ive had if i had to spend a $100 + for another pump i would just add a little more and get a whole new skimmer

Well, that's kind of where I'm at, and some time soon my old ER is going to force me to make a decision.

One, I'm looking at spend more on the pump than the skimmer is worth, even if I just replace it with a new sedra. Two, at 130-ish dollars, why not spend a little more for a new skimmer? The question then becomes how much more. In-100 or 150 BMK more? Or 160 Cone more? Or SRO 1000sss more?

Time to do a water change...fingers crossed that my skimmer starts back up when I'm done.

I've had a Vertex IN-100 for about a year and the stock pump has died ..... any recommendations for a replacement pump?

Would a SRO 5000 work for a 300g mixed reef, stocked with a medium bio load? I'm looking for recommendations as I'm upgrading tanks soon.

Other options? Thanks

Dear Mojo what is your suggestions for my next protein skimmer. I was thinking to get one of these:
Octopus XP 3000
Vertex IN280
SWC 230

Matching skimmer ratings to display/system/bio-load

Matching skimmer ratings to display/system/bio-load

Hello all, i will be looking to get a skimmer for my in wall 120 display and looking for your opinion on skimmer ratings. My total system will be around 300G 120 display 100g stock tank 50g refugium 60g frag and thinking bout adding a small (30-40g)soft coral tank in fishroom for fun.

Ive heard different opinions on sizing your skimmer to system/ display/ bioload. The sizing to display and system is self explaining, however the size to your bio load is a very broad statement.

With display im looking at haveing very heavy SPS/LPS with 2-3 tang and many smaller fish ( heavy load) Frag tank will eventualy be very full and i plan on having couple sm. fish in it. And Sm softy tank in fishroom will have some fish and pack with coral too.

I was looking at Precision Marine bullet 3 ( rated at 300G) but got some negative feed back saying it was too big and i should size skimmer to display tank (120G) although with frag and softy tank id be at about 220G.

Also was looking at some royal exclusiv Vertex skimmers and they rate from 40-100/200G. Which makes me wonder why they can have a such a spread on sizing and others dont/ cant.

Im not looking for a get this not that reply here just your views on sizing skimmer correctly.
