Skimmer Q&A Thread

The in 100 will still work fine. Once you get the 90 heavily stocked you could go to the 180. but I wouldnt ditch it just yet. keep an eye on everything

When I do move up which would be better n-180, swc 160, octopus extreme ex 160, ex 200 and in which order would you rate them when I have heavy bi load

hey Mojo! if you could, please:
i am starting an upgrade...
i have a octo extreme 200 with upgraded wheel now..

i will be upgrading to:
180g DT (upstairs - with drains, etc going to basement)

(basement - connected together)
150g rubbermaid sump (will prob only have 55-75g in it)
55-75g fuge
60g frag tank

potentially a seperate DSB - either part of fuge or 20-30g...

i will have a mixture of sps, lps, etc and atleast a medium if not heavy fish load. i doubt if the octo x 200 would be ok for this... what are your thoughts? thanks
mike

Mojo: What would you suggest for a 40g Breeder with a 20g sump? I will most likely will have a large(heavy) bioload and will keep a mixed reef? Max budget is $300

Mojo~ how do you feel about the H&S 150F2001 for a heavily stocked 90 FOWLR. Its brand new for about 250-275. Thanks.

I need a skimmer recommendation from the gurus here. I have a 125 gallon mixed reef with a heavy fish load, a 55 gallon sump (half full) and a 25 gallon frag tank. So, I have about 175 gallons of total volume with a high fish load. Right now I am looking at a Reef Octopus SRO 3000 Internal skimmer with bubble blaster pump. This is rated up to 300 gallons and is around $400 (this is about what I want to spend. Is this a good choice for me (remember high bioload) or should I be looking at something else. Also, $400 is about all I want to spend. Thanks very much to everyone in advance!

I need to buy a skimmer for my tank, and I think I've decided on a Reef Octopus, but I'm not sure what the difference is between these two:

Other than size and gallon ratings, I just don't know on a functional or performance level what the difference is between the two. Can anyone help me out here?

the 150 is for a larger tank. imo, the 110 is good for up tp 75 g and the 150 is good to 90g

sro 1000int is probably the best fit for the 40g. nice little skimmer

I know about the size difference. They are different types of skimmers though. That's the part I was asking about. I just don't know what the difference is between the recirculating and pinwheel skimmers: which one is better/ more efficient, what the difference is in function between them, etc.

Also, the skimmer I am buying would be for a 90 gal. tank with a 20 gal. sump. Would the 150 recirculating skimmer be good for that setup?

The Recirc skimmer is usually used for those who need to run there skimmer external. The recirc skimmers dont pull the water from outside the skimmer body, the recirc the water from the bottom of the skimmer body and pull it through the venturi. The water has to be fed from a feed pump. 1.5 to 2.5 x the system volume is usually the target. I dont usually suggest it unless you really have too.

The internal models use the skimmer pump to pull water from outside the skimmer body to cycle the water through the body.

Mojo,
It is a 100g tractor supply rubbermaid container (not 150g like i thought).. the water level will be about 15".. (i currently have a stand in there now for the octo..
I am pretty happy with how the RO-X 200 performed in the other tank so maybe go with the sro 300 int?
$ wise, I'd like to not get above $500. Thanks!

Looking for the best HOB skimmer for $200 or less for a 55g.

Anyone have any advice on where you can buy them for the best price and which ones I should consider getting?
