Skimmer Q&A Thread

Looking for the best HOB skimmer for $200 or less for a 55g.

Anyone have any advice on where you can buy them for the best price and which ones I should consider getting?

Check out the Aquamaxx H1. It's essentially the same skimmer as the Warner Marine H1 (re-branded). Excellent HOB.

I'm originally from Rochester as well

Repost, original seems to have gotten lost in the thread. Any and all skimmer recommendations would be greatly appreciated:

I need a skimmer recommendation from the gurus here. I have a 125 gallon mixed reef with a heavy fish load, a 55 gallon sump (half full) and a 25 gallon frag tank. So, I have about 175 gallons of total volume with a high fish load. Right now I am looking at a Reef Octopus SRO 3000 Internal skimmer with bubble blaster pump. This is rated up to 300 gallons and is around $400 (this is about what I want to spend. Is this a good choice for me (remember high bioload) or should I be looking at something else. Also, $400 is about all I want to spend. Thanks very much to everyone in advance!

Hey all. Im building a skimmer. It's 6" dia. 13" from floor to cone. Thinking recirculating. What pump sould I use? I was thinking gx2400 but seems their hard to find. Price matters but quality counts too. Please help!

Mojo -
I have a 120 gal dt with a 50 gal sump underneath it. I have mostly sps and am in the market for a new skimmer. The ATB 840 v2 looks to be a good fit with the room I have in my sump. The footprint in the sump is 15''x15'' and the height to the bottom of my tank is 28'' with a 12'' water depth(not easily changed).

1. What are your thoughts on this skimmer for my tank?
2. Are there any other skimmers that you would suggest that will fit these space constraints?

i was wonderin if the swc 120 would work on my small 15 gallon sps tank
the neck diameter is only 2 inches great thread been following for months first time posting

Received my new SRO 3000 Skimmer

Thanks Mojo for your help in selecting a skimmer. Attached are the pictures of my old EV-400 with Mag 18 after about a week and the SRO 3000 over the same time (not even broke in yet). I'm totally stoked on the new skimmer. Thanks again!

I'm looking to replace my octo extreme 200. Right now it is running on a heavily stocked 75 with a 30 gallon frag tank and 30 gallon sump. I am looking to upgrade main tank to 120 or 150 so new water volume would be 175 to a little over 200. Any recomendations would great. Thinking SRO 3000 or atb 840 v.2 or do I need to go bigger or smaller .

both of those would be great. with a 120 display I would go with the 840 for sure. THe 3000 might be just a tad big until you get a really heavy load on the 150

Bubble Magus NAC6 (wide neck version) UK

Bubble Magus NAC6 (wide neck version) UK

Mojo:

I read a post in the CLOSED Bubble Magus Skimmer Club thread where someone removed the bubble cup and plate from thier BM NAC6 skimmer and got better skimming as a result.

I did just that and over a week long period I can see much better performance than ever before with this skimmer. Nothing else has changed in my tank. The skimmate bubbles are very dry and the collected fluid is darker and thicker. :eek2:

I was trying to understand why it is working and one of the things I could see whilst the cup and bubble plate was on is that the foam at the neck of the skimmer bounces due to turbulance. With the bubble up and plate off there is no turbulance. This version of the NAC6 comes with the Atman 2500 pump.

I am impressed with this skimmer even more now. But I am just wondering if BM put that bubble cup and plate more as a gimmick to show that thier skimmers have the same design as what other manufacturers have, except they probably didnt test the performance? Ie this is probably where other manufacturers spend on R&D?

I think the bubble cup and plate is too small - perhaps slight pressure builds up and is then released causing the foam head to bounce (ie the turbulance)?

I would just like to know your opinion just to understand the skimmer a little more, so thank you in advance for any thoughts you post about this.

I may put the bubble cup back on with a modified bubble plate, ie with more holes? Perhaps this will improve on the stock bubble plate?

Bubble plates can be good or bad. If restrictive they are not good. But honestly I think only a few have good bubble plates. if it works better without it then I would run without. Look at all the skimmers with no plates. Euroreef asm ect... The ac 6 is a really good bang for your buck unit.

I would guess you are getting better reaction time and better through put on your pump.

Hi mojo
u think u can help a new member out and give your knowlegeable opinion on whether u think the sro 2000 would be good for my 50 gall display tank with a 70 gall sump.
If u think there is better options id appreciate it if u let me know. my budget for the most part is unlimited, but i only care about performance. noice, astetics, and ect dont mean anything to me.

the sro 1000 would be a better fit in my opinion.

are there any sro 1000 externals and i hate to ask the same question agian but do u think the sro 1000 can handle 110 total net gallons cuz my sump is really full
im wonderin if i should look at another brand?

skimmer advice please..... i am starting a 210 reef.. looking at a asm g4x,also a reef dynamics skimmer.and octopus....i like the price of the asm but dont like the fact its made with extruded acyrilic. am i being to fussy?

How low from the top of the neck would you keep the water level or maybe the bubbles on an NAC6?
Modded one and am using an Eheim skimmer pump 1103.
have the pump running from outside and running it on it's full flow with the skimmer at 9 inch in the water. I can notice that the water takes some time to rise to level when I start the skimmer so is this sign of pressure ont he pump and should I run the skimmer in deeper water. very little skimmate so far or at least hidden performance with 1-2 overflows every 2-3 days throwing all it skimms back in the tank.
Thanks for any advice.
