Skimmer Q&A Thread

Looking for advice on what skimmer to get for 180g DT. Sump will be either 29g or hopefully a 55g if I can find a cheap tank on craigslist.

I'm looking for the best bang for my buck.

Thanks

Hi, I am looking for a skimmer to fit into the back of a bio cube, I heard the oceananic ones are bad news... can someone help me out on whichones can fit into the back chamber and actually be worth my money? thanks

Hey Mojo I am currently running a swc 160 on my 50 gallon with 20ish gallon sump. In my opinion its a nice skimmer but I would like to go a different route. I currently have 7 fish plus a bunch of snails so I guess a decent size bio load. Was wondering for around $300 what would be a decent upgrade from the swc 160? thnx in advance

the sro 3000 int would be your best bang for buck really.

quiet pulls well and is great on a 180

I havent really come across a good small one that sits inside. The saphire one is about the best I have seen.

I would look at the super reef octo 1000 series. really good fit and a better pump.

I was looking at that but I dont think I would be able to run my sump water level low enough to accomodate that skimmer. I was looking at the Aquamaxx 100 or 150 the Reef Octopus XS 160 or one of the new Skimz skimmers not sure which one yet though if you have any suggestions please let me know

what is your sump level. Maybe the 1000 sss would work.

the xs 160 is better fitted around 75 to 90 gal tanks with a smaller footprint needed. Still a good skimmer but would a bot on the large size. The neck is a little large for a 50g.

I havent figured out the skimz line yet. I have had 2 of them now. THe sk and the sm series both. While The sk 201 skimmed like mad early on the pump was a little loud. and the sm 201 uses a different pump and is more queit it has taken longer for it to kick in and start pulling some nog. Neither one has pull out what my Aquamaxx am 250 has. Not even close yet. But some of that is because they havent broken in yet. Time will tell.

the am 100 would be more than enough skimmer. I would probably go that route if you didnt think the sro would work. A guy local has a 65 and replaced his swc 150 with a sro 1000sss and it is a world of differnce in the skimmer. The sro is more consistant and pulls more in 2 days than the swc did in 2 weeks.

Hope that helps.

hey mojo, got a question on the octo nwb-150. can i make the water outlet pipe longer without impacting the performance? i ask because right now it is sitting on a 3" riser in my sump. i would like to lower it(remove riser) but the outlet needs to be above the water line from what i understand. this would give me much needed room above the skimmer. right now the outlet pipe is at the water line.

the output is how you adjust the water level inside the skimmer. THere are many people that remove this and put on a gate valve. You can do that and put the gate valve down as low as you want. This is a pretty common mod.

it is a new skimmer and has the gate valve. i just want to drop the skimmer down in my sump to allow more room above it. this is why i would need to make the outlet higher, so it still sits above the water line.will this hurt performance? thanks.

it can go below the water. if you raise it you are more than likely going to have issues with it overflowing.

mojo it takes about a month for the skimz to really break in, i have the sm202 recirc, with the 5000 pump, works best with the air valve barely opened though,

My eshopps psk150 pump just died and I'm thinking I'd like to replace it with a better skimmer. Was running it on a 48x18x20 display in a 32x16x16 sump. Space is relatively, so I need to stick something with a similar footprint but I'd like something more powerful. Suggestions appreciated.

Hey Mojo,

Right now I have the SRO 1000SSS skimmer for my 55 gallon SPS tank. I am soon to have a custom sump that will add about 25 gallons more total water volume to the tank (10 of which is a nano tank) and was wondering if there is another skimmer you would recommend. This skimmer seems to be ok, but just not crazy impressed. It pulls out some stuff, but not as much as I would expect. Maybe my water just doesn't have much, but just want the best fit. Thanks
