Skimmer Q&A Thread

Hey Mojo,

I'm looking for a skimmer for a 220g with a 90g sump. I'm thinking of using a Super Reef Octopus 3000 or 5000. What would you recommend? I'm open to another brand or model in the same price range as well.

the eshopps is a ok entry level skimmer. it is what it is. I know that doesnt say much but the low cost keep it at a price point where people can afford something for there tank early on in the hobby.

The skimmers I mentioned will all be much better than what you had.

the 5000 series is the way I would go. Good bang for your buck.

Don't let Deltec money scare you from it if you can afford it....it's worth it!!! It's very comforting to get what you pay for and I can attest the SC2560 is worht it!!!:beer:

SRO 3000 int, Aquamaxx am250, hurricone cat 1 are all great choices.

Mojo - you think an SRO 5000SSS would be too big for a 180 display, 55 gallon sump with a heavy bio-load? I'd like to go a big larger to be on the safe side.

the neck on the 5000 is pretty big. Meaning you need quiet the load to get the ball rolling. I would still get the 3000 for constant performance.

Mojo, I'm in the process of setting up a 210 with a 90 gallon sump. It will be a mixed reef with a medium load. Which would you recommend a Bubble Magus NAC 77 or the SRO 3000INT or ???

stanley same performance and reliability can be found for half the price of a deltec, nothing personal agaisnt them, but the days of the few skimmer companies are gone and so are their over priced equiptment.

Mojo, do you have any thoughts on the ATI Powercone coming out? I've heard there are some pump issues they are working out before the US release. I have 225 display and 350 total water volume. I've been on the waiting list for the Powercone 250. Still think its worth waiting for, or should I try a different skimmer.

I'll be using a standard 90 gallon tank for the sump, which I haven't partitioned off yet and I should have ~28 inches in headspace.

Just reading over the pages in this thread and still can't seem to decide on a skimmer for my system. Its a 120 display in living room and a 55 gallon sump and a 30 gallon fuge and a frag tank to put online later. The sump,fuge and frag tank are in my basement fish room. I was looking at the sro/ati/bk and the list goes on. My question to you mojo is, If room is not an option to me and I really want to feed the skimmer from my overflow/s which are both 1.5 drains plus I wouldn't mind doing external to run a higher level in the sump. What skimmer would you recommend me looking into. Doesn't matter if its old tech or new tech as long as its proven to work good and last lol. I was also looking into beckett skimmer and I know its early tech but it seems that it works and can handle my flow also. Just confused, I guess I am reading too much lol

The sro 3000 is a bit nicer for the money. Just a better feel. Performance will be the same or better with the sro.

Not taken personal at all....I've had the less expensive skimmers that performed well--until I actually got a Deltec in my hands for comparison.

Trust me--I'm weary of the things that are overpriced but willing to pay for it when it gives in return.

People say the sticker price of a GT-R is insane for a Nissan---all I say is drive it down your favorite twistie and you'll be grabbing your pen:lolspin:

well, I can tell you so far there really hasnt been a skimmer that lives up to any of the hype. As skimmers come out and then they realize issues. That is too bad really. I am glad to see them not release a skimmer that people are having issues with. However I wouldnt sit back and wait on a skimmer as you never know how long it will take. I think a lot of people think these skimmer company's are these huge industries with endless pocket books for research. When in reality most are very small and dont have much of an R&d department. I am not saying that they dont know what they are doing but most of it does take some time to get people to make changes have them made and then tested. if it doesnt work then its back to square one.

So all in all I am glad to see ATI take there time and make it right. However releasing something too soon and then delaying kind of looses some customers as well. Hope to see something from them soon.

Mojo i'm trying to decide between SRO and the Skimz for a 250gal DD with a 46gal sump Sps dominate and 12 fish tangs and wrasses. Mojo can you give me a recommendations?

I have had 2 of the skimz now and I would say go with the sro. right now. I havent had the skimz long enough to say to be honest. I can say the es 2800 pump is pretty loud. the es 5000 is much better. The sro 5000 is going to be the way to go really.

Hey MoJo... I have a 90G display and a 29G sump (basically 108 total gal) with a lot of live rock and normally about 10-12 fish. I am about to get a new skimmer and have been following along in this forum and considering AquaMaxx AM150 or AM250 and want to know which one you would recommend? Or if I should consider some other skimmer.

On a differant note. I would like to also ask you a LED question which I noticed in another forum you just got the Evolution and wanted to know if you looked at the Ecoray 60D product? How is the LED light working for you and do you recommed them?

Hello everyone, just a quick question... i just got myself a NAC 7 about a week ago and it has now become the single loudest piece of equipment in my tank lol. Have MP40W(which use to be the loudest) and Eheim 1260 during the day not so bad since there is tons of other noises... kids, tv, outside but at night it drives me nuts lol.

Is everyone else's NAC 7 loud? or did i just get a lemon? the pump itself was actually loose on the mount so i put some rubber feet on the mounting plate so that it wont move from vibration but i feel its more a problem of the needle wheel?
