Skimmer Q&A Thread

i personally dont think the head cleaners help, guess it would if you never clean the cup, too me it is a object in the way of the bubbles rising and will cause them to break sooner and just drops all the crap back into the skimmer, i do use a waste collector though

i have a ati bubble master 250 with two scicc psk-2500. The pumps are meshed modded and i wanted to get the needle wheels for it.

which is better

atb large purple needle wheel
or
aqua maxx large red devil needle wheel

thanks

Well here is a little work I did a while back. I hope this answers your question. I like the aquamaxx/reddemon the best.

Any thoughts on waste containers & cleaning heads? My new sro 3000 ext wi be here next week and I would like to use and external waste container.

Thanks!

Avast makes a really nice waste container for the money. They are nice.

Would an older reef octopus extreme 160 (with the sicce 2500 pump) be an upgrade from a Precision Marine RL 150 on a 90g med-heavy stocking?

It would pull more air and pull more junk. The pump is not the most reliable though. if you put the sicce psk600 on it makes the 160 a great skimmer

Have a Elos system 70 I'm building. Planning on using a Mr Aqua 33.6g as the sump which has high (18') sides which I want to use to maximize Fuge space. Thinking of using an external skimmer so I don't need to stress about elevating the skimmer, and can have the overflow feed the skimmer directly. Probably run the skimmer inside sump for overflow protection so in-principle I'm open to internals just don't want to sacrifice Fuge space by having low baffles.
I also don't really want to spend more than the $500 range for a skimmer.

So I was thinking of these candidates..
1. Super Reef Octopus XP-2000 external
2. SKIMZ SK 202 external
3. SKIMZ SM 122 (external recirculating)
4. Reef Octopus External Recirculating then maybe swap pumps if loud?

< has the skimz sm202 recirc and in all honesty needs to be atleast a 120g heavy stocked tank, have it on my 80g overstocked and it pulls constant because i feed heavy also but would be better off on a larger system will be looking into the next size down myself or the 181 kone

Why does the SRO xp 3000 external have a higher gallons rating then the internal.

And

Do the skimz line only have the skimmer pump inside the body. I thought that it didn't perform as well that way.

Wow looking good John.

Is the Sicci pump quieter than the original?

Are you finding that with this body you are producing more skimmate ?

Yes it's definitely quieter. The old pump used to make a squealing noise every once in a while that would drive me nuts.

The skimmer before produced a good amount of skimmate, but yeah I think it is skimming better now. It seems much stronger and there is more foam production in the cup...so much so that it comes out the top of the cup.

;) jg1 , as much as i love my new skimmer i kick myself for selling my vertex in100 with the atb pump. there is no comparison between a factory in100 and one with the psk1000 or even a sicce 2500

hey guys, thank you for running a thread like this. its really helpful.

im currently planning a future 180 gal + sump and am trying to decide on which skimmer i should go for. my current front runners are an ATB elegance 200 or Bubble king mini 200

im looking for something that will perform well, be reliable and quiet. the tank will be in a bedroom so noise has to be kept at minimum. im looking to buy something on the higher end of the scale from the start, rather than buying something cheap and upgrading anyway.

any advice you could give regarding the above two skimmers or on another model i should look at would be greatly appreciated

Both of those will work well. I really like the small foot print and how quiet the mini is. IT has a larger air silencer that is padded on the inside too. So if quiet is at the top of your list both are quiet but the BK mini will edge out the ATB. The ATB has great customer service and uses the same basic pump as the BK. Good luck it would be a hard choice for sure. I have my favorite for sure but its a matter of taste and what our priorities are for sure.
