Skimmer Q&A Thread

Hello mojo~

So I purchased a used ATI 250 w/ 2 sicce psk-2500's they are skimming the heck out of my heavily stocked 180g, but are kind of loud, I was wondering what would a good replacement pump be, or what you would recommend. i know that there is the psk-1000 and its better than the psk-2500's but Ive also herd people caping of one of the inlets and putting a single BB hy-5000s, is there something better? or would you go with one of these?

Octopus 160 extreme question

Mojo, I currently am running a 60 gallon tank with 2 rose anemones, a few leathers , a hammer corral and some zoos and palys. I a not using a sump currently and using a burmuda aquatics rogue hang on the back skimmer (powered by a rio 2100) which seems to be doing a good job.

I bought a used octopus extreme 160 ( it has the original sicce psk 2500 pump) to possibly switch to for $100. Do you think I will see a big improvement with this skimmer - I know I would have to set up a sump with the octopus. Should I change the pump to a sicce 600 or 1000? Or should I just stay with the burmuda rogue hob skimmer .

the 2 1000's would be great. but by the time you spend another $200 bucks on the pumps it might be better to invest in something different. but either would would work just fine.

You could change out the mesh wheels for the aquamaxx wheels. IE the red demon wheels.

THe bermuda is a good skimmer. I would just stick with that. If it isnt broke dont fix it. if you go with a sump later. the 160 will work. I would just use it until the pump goes out and then put on a psk 600.
 
setting up a new 240. looking for a skimmer as good as the our euroreef has been for all these years. What is your opinion on the JNS line. looking at either a GS2 or SK-2. Or any other skimmers in this price point?

the jns is a great skimmer. I have a sk 2 on my tank now. THe sk2 would be too small for a 240. The sk3 ot sk5 would be a better fit. Depends on your stock level. thesro 3000 would be another good choice. But I really like the jns line.
 
I have an older style Octopus Extreme 160 with a Sicce PSK2500 on it. The skimmer does a great job, but the pump is starting get a little louder and has always had the startup issue. The new Octo Extreme 160s come with the Sicce PSK600, but I'm wondering if I can put a PSK1000 on mine and get better performance. Does the 600 performs as well as the 2500? Is the 1000 much better than the 2500? Also, are the 600 and the 1000 the same physical size? I'm assuming the base of the new model Octo is the same height as the old model, and the 600 is the same size as the 2500. There isn't much clearance under the pump.

I am about to get a 25g Ecoxotic setup. I will be having a custom sump made so I can play with depth of the water.

My biggest issue is finding a skimmer for such a small system. I owned a BM NAC6 when they very first introduced and liked it so I have been looking at the BM NAC3 cone skimmer.

My choices I have found so far are:

BM NAC3 cone - $180
Tunze 9002 - $150
Stock skimmer from Ecoxotic

I have heard the Ecoxotic skimmer is loud but some people have been happy with the performance. I am not going to have a heavily stocked tank as far as fish go but I do plan to feed my corals quite a bit and want to get back into bacteria and vodka dosing.

Any other skimmer options I haven't found?

the sro I would go 200 int over the 1000. The avast would be ok but is it 100g tank or 75 with 25g sump. it may be a bit large for 75g. still a good skimmer. Same with the octo xs 200. Great skimmer but might be a hair large.
if its a 75g look at the list above for Saltwatercoral. PRetty much same list.

The 1000 pump would be too big. It would cause you to have more overflow issues. Bigger isnt always better. The 600 is a great pump for the 160 body. the new pump will fit but might have to retro over the output of the pump.

Havent seen one up close. They had one at MACNA. I went back to look at it and it was gone. Looks like the BM hero 180 from what I can remember. Should be good. But have not played around with this skimmer yet.

rt, I would probably run the stock one at first and see what it does. I have never been truly happy with nano skimmers but the Tunze one does work well as does the nac 3 cone. All three would work well I believe. The nac 3 is more traditional style for in sump. with the atman 1100 pump. I would probably lean more that way. The only downside I have ever heard is people have had the pump fall off the bottom on some nac 3's . other than that they liked them.

I hope that little info is helpful. But I would try the stock one out first.
 
Figure this might be the best spot for this...

I wrote skimz to ask them which Skimmer for my 40gallon total.volume would work and they are telling me the 181 will be just fine...but according to most on here it will have issues...

So I'm not sure what to think...my sump came off my 65gallon cube, so its a bigger sump, so some of the recommendations of ones like BM 3.5 are just not tall enough the really clear the top of the sump...

I was thinking the 121 or 161, but They are not cones, so I know They are not as efficient...so that's why I'm considering the 181 it says it will work on a 52 gallon tank...

The swc180 I have now does fine for the most part, it keeps its head fairly well, dumps some in the cup but also has stuff at the top of the neck...however my bio-load is super light right now, only 3 fish...and all 1" long...so not big at all. I'm thinking as a few more fish are added and I feed a few times a day it will perform better...I will have filefish and be feeding multiple times a day so I need something to be able to handle That with zero issue.

but the swc180 has a 3" neck and the skims 181 has a 4" neck and after reading that seems to cause people to believe it will not be very consistent, so if the 3" is fairly consistent but not super consistent I'm normative sure what the 4" neck would do with a heavier bio-load and a pump That moves less air.

So I'm at a bit of a loss...skimz says the 181 will be fine as opposed to the 121 or 161...but others say not the case.
