Skimmer Q&A Thread

Figure this might be the best spot for this...

I wrote skimz to ask them which Skimmer for my 40gallon total.volume would work and they are telling me the 181 will be just fine...but according to most on here it will have issues...

So I'm not sure what to think...my sump came off my 65gallon cube, so its a bigger sump, so some of the recommendations of ones like BM 3.5 are just not tall enough the really clear the top of the sump...

I was thinking the 121 or 161, but They are not cones, so I know They are not as efficient...so that's why I'm considering the 181 it says it will work on a 52 gallon tank...

The swc180 I have now does fine for the most part, it keeps its head fairly well, dumps some in the cup but also has stuff at the top of the neck...however my bio-load is super light right now, only 3 fish...and all 1" long...so not big at all. I'm thinking as a few more fish are added and I feed a few times a day it will perform better...I will have filefish and be feeding multiple times a day so I need something to be able to handle That with zero issue.

but the swc180 has a 3" neck and the skims 181 has a 4" neck and after reading that seems to cause people to believe it will not be very consistent, so if the 3" is fairly consistent but not super consistent I'm normative sure what the 4" neck would do with a heavier bio-load and a pump That moves less air.

So I'm at a bit of a loss...skimz says the 181 will be fine as opposed to the 121 or 161...but others say not the case.

40g total volume... Honestly all the skimz line is too large. For them to tell you the 181 would work is insane. I agree the bm nac 3 , the tunze 9002, something with a smaller neck.

Solana 67 XL + 40 Breeder Sump? Any suggestions on skimmers? I picked up a Reef Octopus 4" Recirc on Black Friday and am trying to decide whether to keep it or not.

Its to small for my sump...plus that cup will fill up in a day and I run my Skimmer fairly dry.

That skimmer will work. I wouldnt say it is ideal but its not bad. The sro 1000 would of been better. THe octo xs 160 and the SSA cs1 would both do just fine as well.

Mojo,
Where you not testing the RTSS Sump Buddy 40??? If so, how do you like it?

Thanks!

It was several years ago now. it was when they first came out. The etss skimmers are built well and honestly it skimmed well. it was a little noisey as there is no really air silencer but it moves a ton of water . Its quite the skimmer for its small size.

for a 40g system, what size tank is this a 25g 29 ?

is a 18x18x19 and the sump is 20x14.5x15 with 10" of water (which i just measured, i need to bring it down someto like to 8")

the bm nac 3.5 is 16.75" tall, the sump.just dwarfs it.

And????

This isn't about how the skimmer looks in the sump. It is about getting the right size skimmer for your tank. If you use too big of a skimmer it will never pull anything out and all you have done is buy an expensive piece of equipment to oxygenate your water. But hey at least it looks good in the sump, right? :hmm5:

Well there are several that will work . From the older Deltecs, H&S, and euroreef skimmers. On the newer side I would look at the SRO 3000 ext. I think you will be pleased.
Mojo the SRO 3000 ext skimmer that you told me about has work very well ,it is one of the best skimmer i have used ,Thank you again for the help.

JNS vs aquamaxx

JNS vs aquamaxx

Hey Mojo,
I was going to get an aquamaxx Cone 2 for my 90 gallon +30 gallon Sump on your recommendation a while back, but they are out of stock everywhere for 6-8 weeks, and I can't wait that long to get a skimmer. I was wondering a couple of things:

1. I found a JNS SK2. Is there any difference b/w this and the cone 2 other than the fancy fins?

2. What are your opinions about the aquamaxx AM series? would one of those be comparable to the cone 2?

Thanks

Glad to hear. I always try to suggest skimmers as if it was my money. Where would I want to invest my money. :beachbum:

I was checking out the pacific Coast PS-2000 Protein Skimmer but i'm not sure, Can you recommend me an skimmer for my first salty tankn 135 gallons

Im still designing the sump, so i dont have final dimensions yet, only that i have a limit of 22" high.

I'm looking to replace the Sicce 2500 pump on my Warner Marine K2. Problem is matching the air pull, as the K2 requires 920 lph of air, or so. Most pumps seem to be in the 720 lph range, and the next step up is typically over 1000lph.

Does anyone have a recommendation?

I've already checked the Sicce 1000, Tunze hydrofoamer 9420, ATB airstar, and Aquamaxx pumps, specifically.

Thanks

Last set of questions before I finally buy my skimmer for my 65gal DT, 20gal Refug & 30 Gal Sump.

What are your thoughts on the EShopps S-120? I can find it at my LFS for the same as online which is a plus but otherwise your original recomendations are:
1) Sea Side Aquatics CS-1
2) Octo XP-1000SSS

My sump is running at 9" Deep in the sump section but could always build a shelf if I need too.

What are your thoughts on the Eshopps vs a few more bucks for one of the other two?

Thanks
