Skimmer Q&A Thread

the H&S200x2 would be the best fit. it cycle more water and is well balanced.. The sro would be ok too but with the higher water volume I dont think the ATB 840 would move enough water . It would work well. but I would want a little more water turnover.

the 150 would do ok until you start to get a bigger load in the 150. I would get it set up and going before dropping the extra money on the skimmer.

Thanks mojo, I never here anything about the h&s anymore so I wasn't sure how they compare to modern "new & improved" Skimmers. I noticed a descent price on the 200x2 which is what made me inquire about its performance. Thanks for the feedback. Great thread btw.

the sro 3000 would do just fine. If you are going to really heavily stock it with fish then you may push the 5000 lower limit IMO to run consitant. THe JNS sk5, the sro 3000, the oct xs 250, the atb 1050A, and even on the lower end of things the vertex ins 280 would work well too.

Thanks for the recommendations Mojo. What are your thoughts on the Bubble kings? I'm not worried about cost but I don't want to throw money away either. Does the performance and quality justify the almost double price tag?

Hi I'm looking for a skimmer for my 100 gal sps dominated, I've been thinking either the NWB150 or the diablo XS 160, I would like it to be quiet enough so it can be in my bedroom, what would be the best choice, or is any other alternative that rounds the $300 mark?

Thanks a lot

QUESTION......

I have a SWC 160 Skimmer. I think it works just fine.
When the pump is off for even a split second, it looses prime. I have to lift it completely out of the sump and let it purge before i can re-submerge it at away she goes... is this normal behavior for a skimmer? I cant turn it off for feeding unless i want to pull it out

Help? Ideas??

thanks
Drew

a common problem to which there's an easy solution. Instead of lifting the pump/skimmer out of the water...get a piece of tubing and blow into the venturi while skimmer is on in the sump...should start right up. The pump is known to have these problems but the skimmer does rock!

BKs are great, But the service on them has gotten worse and worse over the years. Getting parts through proline has been a pain IMO. Make sure you get one from somewhere like premium or any other reputable place as they will be the people you want to try to get your service through.

the nwb is a entry level skimmer with the older ocean runner style pumps. I would go with a seaside cs2 or a jns sk2. They are just over $300 but would be better options for you. THe octo xs 160 would do ok but with teh same pump I would do the sea side cs1. it has the pump internal, and a pad under it to make it even more quiet than the diablo.

no not Normal. Just one the problem that people have had with the atman 2500 pump in the swc.

how deep are you running it.

the 250 sm is the way to go. it will cycle a little more water which will help with the super heavy feeding you are doing. Great skimmer. But costly.

I have a Reef Octopus BH 2000 HOB skimmer. It is my first skimmer ever and I installed it yesterday. I got some yellow **** looking water but no sludge. I have no idea how high the cup should be. Should the bubbles be barely reaching the top of the collection tube? I keep getting a lot of water in the collection cup. And when I remove the cup to empty do I need to turn off the skimmer? When I emptied I left the skimmer going and then replaced I had to readjust the level cause too many bubbles/water was getting in.

I just went to check on it since I emptied it 5 hours ago. It now has some black stuff building up but its on the inside top of the tube going into the cup and on the lid on top of the cup. However there is nothing in the cup itself except water. Does this mean I need to lower it or what? That tube with the black build up is part of the cup so maybe that is normal. Please help. I'm lost. :(

I putting my plans together for my first tank. I'm looking at a 60g (24"^3) cube. I'm leaning towards the Skimz SM121 or the Reef Octopus SX160. I noticed someone mentioned the Sea Side CS1 (now the CS7), but I've not heard of that one. Any other recommendations? It will be in a 30g (water level around 20g) sump.

Hi Mojo,

Do you know off hand if there is another pump available that will alleviate this issue?

Skimmer sits in the sump that rides about 10"

thanks
