Skimmer Q&A Thread

I have a 50 gallon tank and looking to upgrade the skimmer. Looking at Bubble King Mini 160 or Bubble King Double Cone 180?

Would also like to hear some other suggestions.

Thanks

they are really too big for a 50g. Cube I would imagine. The mini 160 isnt as small as you think. If it has a really heavy load It would work.

the double cone... isnt really a double cone. but youdont have that much to skim a 50g.

I purchased a bubble blaster hy1000-s to upgrade my skimmer pump on the reef octopus nw110. Unfortuneately it seems to maybe work too well as its overflowing even with the gate WIDE OPEN. Is there normal? I cant leave it on without an overflow situation arising. DOes it just need to breakin? I could just leave the drain line in the sume and have it drain backto the tank until the morning and see what occurs overnight.

any ideas/experiences?

Can you please suggest a skimmer?

Would anything in the reef octopus range be worth looking at? as they are easy to get out here.

Cheers

Sorry continutation from above Post ^^

What would be better

Reef Octopus

Vortex 300
or
Octopus Classic 500L OTP : NW-110
or
Octopus Cone Space Saver 1000

the atb would still work well on the 150 but jumping up to the 180would start to really push the limits of the skimmer if you run a heavy fish load. it wold still do ok on the 180 if you run a light load.

Thanks for the advice mojo, I really appreciate it.

Mojo -

I'm setting up a 150 mixed reef with 40 gallon sump. Will be stocked medium. I have had an MSX200 for three years, but i'm finally done with it, and looking for a new skimmer recommendation. I need something that pulls nutrients. Well.

Thanks!

the jns sk2 , the sro 2000 xp, and a sea side aquatics cs2

Has anyone put the Bashsea Blue demon thru the paces. I have to say it is one amazing skimmer. I was a little skeptical prior to trying this one out yet Boy I am glad I did. Mojo, have you run this one yet?

Hello Mojo.
I have a 85g w/29g sump, sps dominated, heavily stocked. I feed 3x a day and was either thinking of upgrading the pump on my octo xtreme 200 to 3000 bubble blaster or look into another skimmer. If another skimmer which one would you recommend?
Thanks
Robert

Another "which skimmer for my tank?" question for you Mojo...

Here's my set-up
> 190 gallon DT (with a 90 gallon sump and 30 gallon remote/frag tank)
> Heavy bio-load (or at least it will be)
> Keeping SPS (so the water needs to be clean)

Looking for a skimmer that will fit the specs above, is quiet (since this will be in the sump in the stand), and won't make my wife kill me when/if she sees the receipt :D

Do you have any recommendations for the most bang for my buck? Was thinking of the SRO 5000, but wanted to get your opinion.

Might consider the ATB since I've heard great things about them, but their price tag might be a hair too much.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Chad

The 3000 sro would actually be more your size. The 5000 will be really big

I played around with one a little at MAcna. Not a fan of the bubble plate in the neck. Just a place for bubbles to pop and loose effeciency. The pumps are good and the build is good as well. But there are some things they could do to improve effeciency IMO. great folks though the do really good work.

Are you giving up on your Alpha?

I'm looking for help in deciding on a skimmer for a 125 with a 30 sump that will start out fowlr then will progress into a reef. I have it narrowed down to one of these 2, sro2000int or the sro3000int. I'm hoping the 2000 will be enough because, the 3000's foot print could get to be a problem.

Yeah... I think so...

For the past month or so, it has been overflowing like crazy, and, in turn, is driving me crazy. Luckily, my corals are still looking good. But I'm sure I'm on borrowed time with that since I can't imagine my tank will continue to do well without a properly working skimmer.

At first I just figured it was because I was scrubbing my rocks weekly, therefore adding too much into the water column and resulting in my skimmer going crazy. But then I stopped scrubbing the rocks for two weeks straight only doing water changes and now my rocks are looking worse AND my skimmer is still overflowing.

I've been considering ATB too, but honestly, I just want a skimmer that works well, is quiet, doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and replacement pumps that don't cost as much as a new skimmer would. That's how I came to the conclusion that SRO might be a good one to go with.

Any other input is welcome.

Mojo- Thanks! I was considering the larger SRO 5000 because of my issues stated above, but I'll definitely consider downsizing to the SRO 3000. I would rather do overkill than be struggling to keep up with my nutrients, but I'll keep researching.

Thanks,

Chad

Hi Mojo, trying to decide between sro 2000int or octo xp200 for my 125g fowlr with 40 g sump. Do you have a preference either way on these two?
