Skimmer Q&A Thread

Ok, so I'm planning a sps, heavy bioload190 or 150, with 70 gal sump filled with great LR. Choosing a skimmer has proven difficult. Price range would be 500-750. Was thinking reefocto brand but is there a better choice? Thanks

I highly recommend any Reef Octopus series. Especially the Diablo Extreme series. For your price range, I would get the Reef Octopus Diablo XS 250. I have the XS 160 and it pulls out sooooooooooooooooo much gunk!

Way to stay on topic! :D

IMO there is not enough of a difference in a cone and non cone skimmer to worry about the performance. I do feel the non cone is a bit more stable

I have my SRO 5000 INT running in 9" of water depth using 2 mods. Using 2 neck extensions and a vented T section after the stock return.

I have noticed a slight surging of the water level in the riser tube after the T section

Does anyone know the GPH rating for a JNS Sk2 (also sold as an aquamaxx cone 2 I believe). Seems like this should be easy to find, but I can't dig oit up anywhere. I'm trying to match my flow to something ideal for the skimmer.

Thanks,

Justin

A little over 500gph. Air draw is 720 lph

MOJO or anyone....can you talk me out of a RLSS r12 external for a 50g...going to be heavy stocked reef????

anything else I should be looking at under 1800???

THX

Thank you, skimmy. I appreciate your advice. I would like to know why you recommend the RLSS? The lowest lph of the skimmers I listed is 1100, so with 160 gallons that's 687lph per 100g. The RLSS 10 is the same price as the Reef Octopus XP3000. Do you think the RLSS is better? If so, why? Is it quieter? Thank you for the help.

I got the XP5000 and now I've got the Rlss 10-E on my 180 , This skimmer preform much better then the XP5000 .
Rlss are not expensive and got good Skimmer's the only thing I was doing on them is modify the Volute, air intake and they was the best at that mod..lol

Here is the Rlss 10 E :

Maggie, pm me the changes you made to the Venturi if you can. Your knowledge and experience has been missed.

Mavgi nice to see you back again.
I heard the 10000 pumps had some issues, how are yours running. How long have you had them for.

sorry, my bad....500 gallon

I honestly would go for the r12 or the AquaMaxx cone 7. In the latest issue of reef hobbyist someone with a700 gallon said the cone 7 damn near handled their heavy load. My buddy has a freshly cycled 500 with nothing but a bunch of pukani and a large sailfin tang and about 20 chromis and he has the jns version and he loves it.
