Skimmer Q&A Thread

I have a pro clear aquatics mps250. I got it used without a pump. Does anyone have any experience with these? I'm on a budget(aren't we all). I had a mj1200 on it and it was ok, but it seems like I should be getting more skimmate. I was thinking about an sca302. I guess my question is whether to try and retrofit a different pump on the mps250 or get the sca302. They both seem to be in the same price range. Oh, its on a 125 with a 40b sump. Total water vol. Maybe 140g. Not heavily stocked now, but it will be, and I'm having a phosphate issue right now.

I have a 225, and it was about 6 inches totally below the surface of the water, and worked "OK" then I read somewhere that never have your pump more then 2 inches below the water, so "Dummy" me, cut the hose and made it 2 inches below the water, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! my skimmer was uncontrollable, no matter what I did, it would overflow in less then 1 minute, turned it all the way down, turned it all the way up, nothing helped. Then I went to Lowes and bought more hose, cut it to about 4 inches, and now it's controllable, but still not right, not foaming into the collection cup, bubble are fast, and what I feel, not quite enough, bubbles at the bottom of my collection cup, no more, no foam, they just sit at the bottom of my collection cup, I'm at a loss. My 225 Skimmer is 4 months old

i was set on getting a rlss r6 but i have been seeing alot of complaints about there pumps breaking down. this is really making me think against going with their product. any thoughts on this??? thanks.

Where have you heard this ? RLSS is high on my list for a new skimmer.

If you like the rlss look at the Aquamaxx cone series. Same hybrid cone/full body with a really nice pump. The shark pumps (modified sicce) are amongst the quietest and most efficient pumps out.

Nice skimmer, but for what I need the foot print is a little to big....:sad2:

Sea side aquatics has some space saving models worthy of a look. Particularly the cs1 with the sicce psk600. Imo it's the equivalent to the rlss r6 in capability. I've had one and it pulled out coffee colored skimmate.

Alright I need some help. I acquired a 180 tank for display and a 75 gallon for sump. I plan in 18 months to upgrade again to a 240 tank with the 75 sump. I need some skimmer advise. I currently have an Omega 150 on my 150 gallon FOWLR. I am not doing reef tanks just heavy stocked FO tanks. I have looked into Skimz skimmers a little.

With a F.O tank, you will have a higher bio load, cause you will have more and bigger fish. So you would want to go as big as you can afford and also fit into your sump...
Here's what I am looking at:

1. R.O. POV DC3
2. Skimz Leopard SL 203
3. RLSS DB10-I

these 3 fit into my sump and are beasts, worth looking at....

I looked at the Leopard and the Monzter 203. Haven't really looked at the RLSS yet. I have been looking at the aquamaxx line as well.

I would highly suggest aquamaxx. Their cone series is one of the best skimmers out imo. Top quality at a mid level price point. Cone 5 would be a good fit but.. for the 180 the cone 3 will be better. No need for a 10" skimmer on ANYTHING UNDER 250 GALLONS.

I have a SRO 5000 on my 180 gal FOWLR and I get good results after a few skimmer mods. I agree with getting a 10" body skimmer
