Skimmer Q&A Thread

Could us some information on what skimmer to get, here is my tank info.

30 gallons with 20 gallon sump.

The trick is making it work in a cylindrical sump, though I don't think this will be to much of an issue. I haven't glued anything in place yet.

Is the sump sectioned out or is it just an open tank?

if sectioned, what dimensions for a skimmer are you looking at?

hi reeftivo

what u think the best skimmer i could put on a 10 gal tank with a ten gal fuge?

A sea side aquatics cs3.5 is small but very functional. Solid pump in the sicce sk200 too. All of the nano skimmers are very finicky ime. Tunze makes a nice nano skimmer though in the 9004.

Sump will be sectioned out, as I said I haven't glued anything yet so I'm open on the dimensions. Though if I could save space with a skimmer that has a pump built in this would be a plus. Seems like the aquamaXx and Octopus skimmers are the most popular?

Im on a bit of a budget, so Ive been looking at the SCA skimmers. What would be better for a 55 gallon DT/20L gallon sump? the SCA-301 or the SCA-302? I dont believe I have the height needed for the SCA-303 under my stand.

before i started looking at these skimmers, i was looking at the reef octopus nwb110. Im planning an LPS dominant tank, couple of occelaris clowns, blenny, goby+pistol shrimp combo, 6 line or mccorskers wrasse + cuc just to give you an idea of potential bio-load. Thanks!

hello,

i have a DDNWB 150 Reef Octopus 6" Dual Recirculating Protein Skimmer that is outside of my sump. r o recommends a 5-6" water depth. it currently has a 9" depth. the only way to raise it would be to cut a hole into the cabinet above, which is doable.

do you think the extra 3" of depth will effect performance enough to need to cut a hole a raise it?

the water level in the skimmer is within 3" of the neck. it is producing pea size bubbles into the neck though.

thanks!

Currently setting up a 90g with 30g sump and need to pick up a skimmer. Right now I'm in between the following 3 and wanted to get everyone's opinion

AquaMaxx ConeS CO-2 In Sump Skimmer

SWC 160 Cone

Reef Octopus Diablo XS 160

All relatively in the same price range, I'm not set on any of these just read good reviews and they're around my budget.

The nwb 150 is a balanced skimmer. I like that option over the sca skimmers.

90G folwr - light bioload, no messy eaters - reef octopus xs160 or sss 110/150 ?
opinions/suggestions ?

I'm not too am familiar with those models. The sro line of reef octopus skimmers are their best performers imo. Look into those.

The recommended depth is where it most likely will perform it's best. I bet it will produce more consistant dry skimmate at the 6" level.

Cone 2 without a doubt imo. Awesome pump, balance, and silent. The diablo's are kinda noisy and the swc is a decent unit but the aqiamaxx out performs it.

I am in the process of purchasing a new skimmer for my 320 gallon heavily stocked reef tank. I have got down to two skimmers either the BK supermarin 250 with RD3 controllable pum or the Vertex Alpha 300.

What are people's thoughts on either of these and are they worth the extra money. I am interested in ideas.

Whatsup everybody. New to Reef central and happy to be on board. I have a quick question about my skimmer which doesn't seem to be doing the job. I have a coralife 125g skimmer. I know its not the greatest skimmer but it got the job done for my 75 gallon tank for a while. My problem is this.

After a day that I cleaned it out, it seemed to stop foaming no matter where I position it (water level wise) and where I open or close the venturi. Now I know skimmers even after you clean them need a few days to break in, but this is going on about a week now. Has this ever happened to anyone? Does it have something to do with the air??
