Skimmer Q&A Thread

Thank you all who contribute, I have read my self in circles and now am lost on upgrading my skimmer. Set up is 120 sps dominant, 9 fish and a 30 sump. Currently using an old Octo150 with the OTP2000.

Space is limited to 14" by 11". I have heard good things about askoll, airstar or sicce pumps and would like to maximize skimming efficiency as I add more coral and a couple of small fish. $600 budget. Have 10% off with one fellow. Thank you for a couple of suggestions. Will be adding more corals and a couple of more fish. Thanks!

I have looked at:
ASM GC9
AE DC Pro Cone 320
RLSS 8Ri
ATB840 v2.0

Thanks for the es5 from seaside aquatics recommendation. I noticed that a local shop carries ESHOPPS skimmers. Would you recommend this brand? If so, what size for my 60 cube with about 10 extra gallons in the sump. Thanks!

I forgot to mention that I need something that runs quiet as the skimmer will be under the tank in the stand. Thank you.

Narrowed my choice to :
es5 from seaside aquatics
ESHOPPS S-120

They both have the sicce pump. What is the difference between them? I can get the ESHOPPS for a little less than the seaside aquatics.

Any final advice would be helpful. You guys are great. Thanks.

ATB hands down one of the best skimmers made for that size tank.

Jeff at reef dynamics is an awesome guy and I really like him and the fact that he's an american manufacturer but but the eheims are still german pumps and they don't compare to the red dragons at all. BK all day imo. You be hard pressed to find a skimmer built as well as a bubble king. You could however find one that produces as well though. Jmo

I think that you are right! Red dragon have no competitor!

Just wanted to say "Thanks" to Drae for the recommendation. I ordered my JNS Shark Series 7 and received it this week. Saved me a ton of money vs. the U.S. brand and it was actually in stock. Can't wait to use it, this thing is huge!

Keep this thread posted. My buddy that had this on his tank is now selling his house so the reef is down as of 2 weeks ago. Post pics when the akimmer is running. You won't be sorry, that skimmer is a monster.

Skimmer for a 10 gallon tank?

Skimmer for a 10 gallon tank?

One thing I have noticed through a lot of threads, is descriptions of larger size tanks (I had a 20 gallon once, currently working on a 10 g). I'd eventually like to work my way up, and encounter all the problems and headaches that some of you deal with (hehehe).
For now, my biggest question is: At what point do I really need a skimmer for a 10g tank? I plan this little guy as a FOT, and maybe my QT later in life (a few years from now).
Any advice would be appreciated.

What so you guys think about vertex omegas 150 or rlss r6i /8i for my 100 gallon system with 16 fish and a few more later.
What defines low or heavy or super heavy bio load

Calling on the skimmer experts-

I feel that my old school Octopus NW150 skimmer is just not cutting it for my 75g mixed reef with 20g sump. I don't have any other skimmer to compare this to as its been with me for 6 years in three different tanks. I feel the skimmer collects skimmate at a pretty slow rate. For example, it collects about 1/4 of a cup weekly. I want a skimmer that can skim about an entire cub up of dark skimmate a week. Is that possible? Am I being unrealistic? Does anyone own a skimmer that actually continues to skim all day every day and can fill their collection cup with dark skimmate weekly? If so, that's the skimmer I want!
By the way, no matter how I feed (light or heavy), the skimmer produces the same amount of skimmate which is why I feel its not really efficient. I have more coral than ever before and want to be able to feed a little heavier without dealing with nitrate or phosphate issues. Any recommendations on a better skimmer for my tank application would be appreciated.

it is cutting it... my bet is the flow through the sump is too high if anything.

Can some experienced skimmer peeps help me out please? So here are my plans...

I'm setting up a custom 75 gallon SPS tank which will have a very high bioload of fish that require multiple feedings daily, about 5-6 times a day, with NPS corals such as sun corals, dendros, gorgonians, etc. So I'll be doing a lot of daily and night feedings. So, my tank will be getting fed almost 24/7... What kind of skimmer should I get and at what rating? Price and electricity cost is not an issue, except for the bubble king lol, other than that, I don't... What do you guys think?

Oh, also, I have a height clearance of 34" from rim to rim, in which I can fit a skimmer that's about 32" tall.. just putting it out there..
