Skimmer Q&A Thread

One thing I have noticed through a lot of threads, is descriptions of larger size tanks (I had a 20 gallon once, currently working on a 10 g). I'd eventually like to work my way up, and encounter all the problems and headaches that some of you deal with (hehehe).
For now, my biggest question is: At what point do I really need a skimmer for a 10g tank? I plan this little guy as a FOT, and maybe my QT later in life (a few years from now).
Any advice would be appreciated.

point is moot... you can do water changes easily and the skimmer becomes an unjustified cost... skimmers really just keep organics down for water change ease...

the ecoplus pump(Modified by Jeff) vs sicce. First hand the ecoplus is a stronger more reliable pump.

I've ran the eco plus pump before and I like the sicce pumps better. I've owned 3 euro reef/reef dynamics skimmers ( sedra on 2 and eco plus on 1) and I wasn't a fan of the eco plus or the sedra for that matter. Just a matter of opinion.

well... fact... not opinion... the ecoplus is a stronger more reliable pump.. Why do sicce pumps need to be in deep sumps... they are weak...now it is not so much the pump as the impeller assembly and how cheap it is... wanna see a sicce perform... stick a tunze impeller in one... amazing difference.

As far as performance and noise the sicce are better pumps imo. Tunze silence are sicce blocks also. True about the impeller being better than sicce's impeller though... No arguement here on that one. The atb 840 v2 is ran with a modified sicce as is a ton of other top performers. I understand where your coming from though because i'm particular about certain brands as well. I don't like bubble blasters myself, even though the impeller and needle wheel seem nice the blocks aren't that great imo.

In my particular case the eco1056 is proven quieter than my psk1000. results vary I'm sure. The resonance a pump puts out will vary of course. I don't think the sicce is a bad pump at all, it is a more efficient pump but don't think it to be any bit superior the ecoplus.

I am looking at the following two skimmers and am looking for other ones to look at for a 165 Gallon.

Octopus Diablo 8" Skimmer with DC Pump (DCS-200INT)
Bubble Magus Curve 9 Skimmer
Reef Dynamics INS-180

Is there that big of a difference between cone and non-cone skimmer?

Looking around the 400-500 price range.

Ins-180 imo. The curve runs a cheap chinese pump and I don't trust the chinese dc pumps either. Again jmo.

ins 180.

Thanks all. I have a $100 credit at the store that has them too, so would be best to use it up and help out on the new skimmer purchase.

I have the INS-80 right now on my 90 gallon and like it, just want to make sure there is not something better out there. I am not a fan of spending $1k+ on a BK skimmer.

Laguna MAX-FLO 1350

Laguna MAX-FLO 1350

my LFS only has the MAX-FLO 1350. is that all i need to replace the broken down Red-dragon pump? oops wrong forum

a heavy bioload is when the tank is around capacity in livestock...(and of course overstocked).

What defines capacity for salt water. I just started salt water. I know for fresh it was a recommended general rule of thumb inch per gallon of course it differs with larger fish.

I mean I use to have close to 100 freshwater fish in my 90

And now I have 16 or so fish and it's considered heavy bio load ? Just curious

1-2 fish 100 gallons = low bio load obviously
N fish in 100 gallons = ? Bio load

depends on type and size of the fish...also the capacity of said fish to grow... Many will suggest a Tang needs 150+ gallons(yes other fish are in there but they do better in larger aquariums).

Swcc, it really depends on what sicce pump and what skimmer. But more than not the sicce pump venturu and wheel configuration s pull more air than the eco pumps. The eco\ sedra/ king pumps all very similar will cycle more water than air by design for the skimmers they were designed for. Pumps are more quiet pumping water than air and run cooler. The issue with the sedras and eco both is rotor swelling and failure. Not that they won't run well. But in my experience. The newer sicce pumps out shine the ecos. The older sicce psk 2500 was the only one that I wouldn't suggest as it had adirectional volute.

Hips that helps. ... mojo~

Threads that speak of this eco plus experience?... Sedra.. sure... But specifically eco plus. ....

I have had them all man. ... You can use the ecos as replacements for sedras. Just have to know what one to get. Same as the vertex in pumps ad well. .. And experience? I think I have a little of that. I wouldn't steer anyone wrong. Ever. Lots of Good info here. Bottom line. . Pumps are pumps and they were meant to pump water. We try to get them to do something they were not designed to do originally. Some do it Beret than others. ..alot depends on need. What some lack in air draw make up for in water turnover. So many get hung up on scfh. And even at first I did a little. They are all good and have their place.

Good day all
mojo~

by 'experience', i'm not asking of your experience(which I know and respect), I'm talking about accounts where eco plus pumps are "having issues with rotors swelling and failing".
