Skimmer Q&A Thread

Looking for an in sump skimmer for an Elos 70 (55 gallon) + 20 Gallon sump.

Considering the following (listed in order of interest)
Aquamaxx Cone S CO-1 (but availability sucks, can't find this anywhere)
Sea Side Aquatics CS5.5
Sea Side Aquatics ES5 (pretty much the same as the Bubble Magus Curve 5 with better pump).

Thanks in advance for any guidance/opinion/feed back on any of the above.

All of the above would be more than adequate. I like Aquamaxx as well as SSA brand of skimmers. I do like the cs series a little better than the es series though in the sea sides because I really believe there is no benifit whatsoever to the wine glass body.

A friend is looking for a skimmer for a 40 gallon tank medium bio-load.
The spot in her sump is small, only 7" x 11" x18" with a small budget.

She is looking at a SCA 301 and I'm afraid that a little small.
Anyone have some suggestions?

anyone?

Bubble magnus NAC6 is cheap should fit too... Ideally find a local club and find a used skimmer. You can easily end up with $250 skimmer for $50.

I would say yes there is a big thread on them SC 150 club that skimmer used to be called the SC65, it is cheap with enough success stories and reliability to be a safe choice. Also look at Petmountain they have good prices on skimmers must go to cart to see the prices.

Ok cool.
Thank-you

Looking for a skimmer for a tank that is 180g w/ 75g sump w/ 40g fuge. Heavily stocked, I am currently running an ATB 840 V2, but I don't think it will be enough to keep up with the poo.

ATB deluxe 10.5 would handle that easily. If you want similar but way cheaper go with an aquamaxx cone 5.

So I am in the process of selling my ATB 840 V2 and am going to need to replace it as my system has grown.

System: 180g display, 75g sump (1/2 full), 40g fuge - will be heavily stocked.

I am currently looking at these 3 skimmers:

1. Aquamaxx ConeS CO3 - $409.99
2. SKIMZ SM 201 Monzter E-Serie $449.99
3. SKIMZ SK 201 Kone E-Serie $419.95

Any recommendations are appreciated!

I would also add

1. Reef Dynamics INS 250
2. Life Reef VS3-30

both skimmers are well built and very stable

The coneS co3, and both skimz skimmers, and the atb 840v2 are virtually the same... All are 8" diameter skimmers with close to 1000 lph of air pull. No need to ditch the atb ( one of the best 8" NW skimmers ever made) and replace it with another 8" skimmer. Bump up to a 10" model.

Do they even make a 10" model for the skimz?

The ATB 10 is out of my price range unfortunately.

If that is the case I'm better off sticking with the ATB 840, but i feel its not rated for my setup.

The sm 251 $749.99 and the aquamaxx cone 5 $699.99 are both 10" diameter skimmers but the aquamaxx would probably be balanced a lot better with 1500 lph over the skimz with 1920 lph. No experience with skimz but I can vouch for the aquamaxx line. The $700 cone 5 is very comparable to the atb line but the askoll pumps on the bigger atb's are better than the sicce pumps. The aquamaxx runs basically the samp block that your atb 840v2 runs. Sell the atb for like $450 obo and cover most of your upgrade costs. Jmo

I am actually looking at going with the Avast CS3 Cone Skimmer Kit with 2 x Sicce PSK-1000 in recirculating mode & using my return to feed it.

Question though would my sump & fuge even add a load to the skimmer or is it strictly the fact my display is 180g w/ a heavy bioload?

Thanks!

Count your display volume and bio load only. Unless your refugium is a display fuge with an actual feeding regiment and enough fish to add additional bio load I wouldn't add that to your tank volume when determining a skimmer.

I have a 120G and was looking at the SRO 2000 INT for about $410. Sound, performance and price are the deciding factors. Do any other skimmers compare without compromising?

The skimmer section of the sump I'd put it in is 12" x 14.5" and 11.5" x 8.75" around the lip area up top. It's a Ruby 36S.

Thanks

How about better performance, quieter, and cheaper? Aquamaxx em200 and aquamaxx coneS CO-2. The sicce shark pumps are better IMO than the chinese bubble blaster, the plumbing on the Aquamaxx performs better out of the box than the sro which needs a modification to be silenced and the air/water ratio on the aquamaxx models make them more balanced units.

The Aquamaxx are backordered everywhere I've looked. Any recommendation of where to pick one up?

Thanks
