Skimmer Q&A Thread

I built a protein skimmer for my 120 (+ 30 gallon sump). I made it a few years ago based on the SRO 5000 body size area, just square instead of round. I've always felt like the skimmer was way too large for my tank. My bubble blaster 5000 finally went out today and I'm wondering if I should buy another bubble blaster 5000, or should i down size to a bb 3000 and make a new body. I know this has been asked before, but does it hurt to have a skimmer this oversized? I'd rather just buy another bb5000, but if i can get better performance with a BB3000 I'd make the switch.

What are the best/most reliable skimmers in the $200 price range for a 75 gallon tank with a 40b sump? The top 2 I have found so far are the BM Curve 5 and the RO Classic 110INT. Size, price and water level is fine on both. Performance and reliability are the deciding factors. I care more about reliability. I'm not partial to these two, just the ones that I have noticed in my price range so far.

Skimmer pump replacement JNS Sk2

I have had a JNS Sk2 skimmer on my 135g DT (w/35g sump) for 4 years. the pump is now gone and I found out that it would cost $180-200 to replace.

Can I use a different make of pump with this skimmer?

Can I make a pump stand from acrylic and use an aquatrance 2000s skimmer pump with it? BTW is this pump brand from Reef octopus reliable?

Also,has anyone done something like this before? Do I need to just balance the air input into the skimmer to match the old pump?:uhoh3:
 
What is wrong with the pump? Sometimes an over night soak in a water/vinegar solution will get a pump working like new again.
 
Pump has short circuited.

I live in dubai and thus had to hav ehte pump connected to a transformer. When I came back from my vacation, i found the that the pump was not working.. when I switched on the pump, the pump didnt move any water or air and the transformer made a big sound and both ends of the transformer became black and also black smoke and burning smell came from it.

I changed the transformer and that too blew :eek1:. Same problem and symptoms - I called an electrician and he checked and found that the pump short circuited and thats why this is happening.

Tried to open the pump and found that the impeller is impossible to remove and completely stuck inside.

Thus, I'm looking for a new skimmer pump :facepalm:
 
The JNS SK line of skimmers used the Sicce PSK-600 and PSK-1000. I believe the SK-2 used the PSK-600 pump, and this would be the exact bolt up replacement for you. Price on that pump is approximately $115.

This is what I was going to say too, I just did not know the exact model.. You could at least steal the block and would be the cheapest way to go.

If i am unable to, would the aquatrance 2000S pump from reefoctopus work well??

Also how are the ROCK pumps from bubble magus? (SP-2000 maybe)?
 
Looks like the SK600 is much more similar to the SHARK 2.0 pump. Even the slots on the body and shape of body is very similar. Thus, it will fit in the same pump stand that came with the skimmer originally.

Also, I will have to import the pumps to my city so the cost is approx +-10% of each other for the aquatrance and sicce.

So will sicce sk600 be ok for this skimmer? Just want a opinion prior to purchase.

I am setting up a 120 in a few weeks and I purchased this skimmer, on the advice of my LFS-a good one-but I have NO experience with Reef Octopus, let alone this model, which is I believe is very new.
Any opinions/advice is greatly appreciated!

RO skimmers some perform very well while others can be touchy.
Overall they are a nice middle of the road skimmers.

It's a new model and that's why I am a bit leery. It IS the RO-PS-1000INT and Coralvue is the distributor that sells to Aquarium Services in Toronto, where I bought it.

Ok 1000 you posted 100 earlier, that model I am familiar with.

That is not a bad skimmer at all only issue that might be a little small for a 120 gallon aquarium.

Bubble blaster pumps are great.
