Skimmer Recommendation

Can anyone recommend a good skimmer for a 300 gallon reef tank with a 40 gallon breeder tank as a sump? Right now it has a Berlin XL and it is a piece of junk. I'd really like to upgrade to a EuroReef skimmer, but they are very pricey and this is a display tank I maintain at a research facility, so a very limited budget. I've been looking into the ASM skimmers. How do they compare to the EuroReefs?

Those look great, however they are beyond what I can afford. If possible, I'd like to find a skimmer for around $500. Maybe I could get a used one???

I run a AquaC EV-240 on my 75g SPS (165g total) on a mag 12 (which I feel is underpowered for the skimmer). I'm very happy with it. Since you've got a 300g tank, you might have to go up to the EV-400, but I feel these are much more in your price range than the deltec or bubblekings, etc. Euroreefs and GEOs are super impressive, but I don't know how much either would be for a system your size.

I'm looking to mod my EV-240 with a needle wheel recirculating pump. If it works how I think it will, I will be in love, and I feel like it might be able to handle ~300g worth of tank for about $550. Dunno how this stacks up against the GEO/Euroreef in price.

What is the budget? ASM compares very well to ER. An ASM G4-X would be a good option.

www.geosreef.com makes needlewheel skimmers for the hobbyist that are not only affordable, but come with customer service second to none.

Fits your budget and is hard to beat in performance. I know of several people using them personally that would recommend them as well. Geo is a hobbyist that has evolved in the craft over the years into one of the best makers of acrylic products in the affordable category.

Thanks Dave. These look nice as well. I'm a native St. Louisan and Cardinal fan!

Great to hear!! The Cards have come close a few times the last few years only to disappoint...hopefully we will get it finished next year.

The GEO looks similar in spec to a ASM G4-X
8" body
28" height
13x13 footprint
Sedra 9000
$445

The G4-X
8.5" body
30" height
13x14 footprint
Sedra 9000
$369

The ASM G4-X seems like a better value. If you have $500 to spend, you could get a G5

G5
8.5" body
36" height
16X17 footprint
2 Sedra 9000 pumps
$490

There is a big difference in quality between the GEO and ASM. The GEO uses all cast parts and is built like a tank. I don't know if you can say that about the ASM's. Just my opinion.

I think the ASM skimmers are pretty solid. I see a lot of LFS use them around here too. Probably because they don't cost more then the entire tank and inhabitants yet function very well.

Thanks for recommendations

Thanks to all of you who posted replys. They were extremely helpful in my decision. I think I'm going to go with the Geo. They are most similar to the more expensive EuroReef that I ideally wanted. Thanks again.

go with the g5 with the two sedra pumps. It will remove some gunk, and these are deffinitely skimmers meant for a person that is on a budget, but they deffinitely get the job done.

Asking someone on here what kind of skimmer to get is like asking them what their favorite food is. No offense to you for asking but you are getting opinions of what people use. Deltec users swear they have the best skimmers on the market. ASM users swear the Deltecs are not as good as ASM's. Euro Reef users think their skimmer can out perform anything around. The best option for you is to read about all the skimmers peolpe will throw at you and make the best decision based on your needs and your budget.
Bottom line is, I have SEEN a Jebo skimmer out pull an ASM skimmer in the same sump. Does this mean the Jebo was better? No. It just means the guy saved a couple hundred bucks more than his friend did. I personally use a MR-2 and love it but that doesn't mean there aren't better ones out there. I'm sure this post will upset a few people but i am tired of the debate about who's skimmer is the best. They are all good if setup properly. Base your decision solely on the skimmer that meets most or all of your needs. This is not directed towards anyone just venting over always hearing,"my skimmer is better than your's is."
Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing. I really value fellow reefers' opinions because it adds another dimension to the manufactuer's product information. Thanks for yours.

i am wiht you bud i for one ,,and please nobody take this to heart ,,am tired of hearing about people going out and stending alot of money on all this crap ,,i do believe that you need a good skimmer ,,but my god do you really need to spend thousands? what happen to good old water changes ,,i would rather buy a skimmer that is a good one for about 3 or maybee 4 hundred or who knows myabe a little less and spend the rest of the money on my wife and son for letting me get involved in this crazzy hobbie
