skimmer recommendations

afternoon,

i'm at wits end. i have very limited realestate in my sump for a skimmer and Tunzes are the only ones small enough in foot-print to fit.

here's my quandary: i've got a 40breeder with 20L sump (sump is 3/4 full when running). i've only got 6-7" square space in the intake for a skimmer.

the goal of the tank is mixed reef, predominantly SPS and zoanthids with a few choice LPS (euphilias and candycane corals).

i want to run the skimmer in sump but dont' know if i should go with the 9002 or the 9005. i've read tons of reviews on the 9002 (and talked with a few that own them) and all are very favorable.

my biggest concerns are two-fold: the small size of the collection cup and whether the skimmer will be able to handle this size system.

many thanks,
eric

If you are going with in sump you are best off with the 9010. It is more than enough skimmer and a 9005 would be almost the same price by the time you add the sump kit which comes with the 9010.

thanks for the reply, rvitko...

i was unaware that i'd need the sump kit with the 9005. i'll shoot an email to my LFS to see what he can do for me.

The 9005 needs kit 9005.40 for in sump use unless you will run a constant 10-11" water level. The 9010 includes this set and is only about $30 more than a 9005 and 9005.40.

intake section of the sump, where the skimmer will sit, runs 9 1/2".

will hopefully hear back from my LFS tomorrow so i can make my final decision.

thanks, Roger,
eric

Either would work in that case but for the 9005 the water level would need to be constant without using the 9005.40

thanks for all the info, Roger. i'm going to place a call to my LFS shortly.

i know that the intake section will run a constant 9.5" the intake section only gets higher than 9.5" when i shut down the return pump for cleaning and other maintenence chores.

got another question for you, Roger.

placed a call to my LFS for a 9010 yesterday and got an email from him today saying his 2 sales reps said the 9010 was unavailable at this time and couldn't give him an ETA on receiving more.

is there a shortage of them right now, or is this issue just localized to North Carolina? FWIW, my most trusted LFS is 1.5 hours away in Garner, NC and was really looking forward to picking up the 9010 next week .

No, they are in short supply the mold for the impeller shaft was damaged several weeks ago and they just started coming in again. The 9010 is not readily available at this time.

thanks for the info, Roger. i had the LFS get on a supplier's waiting list. only a few others in front of my LFS so hopefully i'll get a call in the next week or two.

installed a borrowed CSS 65 for the time being, and can't wait to see how much better the Tunze 9010 will do.
