Skimmer users. Whatcha got.. Recommendations?

Not sure why you guys have a problem with AquaC...they changed the skimmer a few years ago, but still seem to carry the bad rap they got from the earlier models. I have a EV-180 on my 150 and it works great.

I use 2 of the AquaC Remora Pro w/ Mag 3 on my 180g .I was not very impressed. Just my .02 cents.

1.The mag pump ran hot.

2.Skimmer is hard to tune (I hate the rubber o-ring thing).

3.The injector nozzle clogs very easy. One small snail or Astrenia star and you have to take the whole thing apart and clean out the injector.

I agree the Remoras are not very impressive. I have one on my hospital tank...it's not very impressive....but the EV is great.

Not to hijack...but what IS a good HOB skimmer

Ocotopus or Deltec...

Been doing a lot of research on skimmers the last few days. The AquaC 180 does get great reviews. (The newer style) At least the reviews that I came across. ;) I had no idea how many companies are out there untill now. And they ALL make the same claims. I feel like its such a shot in the dark.

The method that the Aqua C skimmers use to mix the air and water is highly ineffective when compared to what is available on the "quality" needlewheel/pinwheel skimmers today.

Spray injectors get clogged, stop functioning correctly when surface tension is altered (from food or hands), and they are not any where near as consistent overtime due to build up, salt creep.. you name it. And the pumps required draw more energy.

I'm not saying they're garbage. They work... but you have to maintain them properly, and not as well as a proper needle wheel skimmer.

not all "needle wheel" skimmers are effective, and they all require rather substantial pumps as far as I know...
I've had two of needle wheel skimmers, and if given a choice, I'd choose a a simple down-draft design over a needle wheel every time.

Down draft skimmers require very large inefficient pumps. Pin wheel style skimmers are much more efficient. They use a lot less power. Bubble King, Bubble master, Deltec, ER, H&S, AMS & Octo all use pin wheels. Look at the old ETSS skimmers and the size pumps those things take. Dose anyone even run those anymore? I used to run an ETSS, but would never go back.

Yeah, I also qualified that my post with "quality" and "proper".

Of course, there are many NW style skimmers out there that aren't winners. Like FHcorals mentioned, the pinwheel variety are the best IMO. Some of the best skimmers on the market are pinwheels. H&S, ATB, BK, Deltec, ER RC models, etc.

With regards to a large pump, PW skimmers draw air directly into the pump. As the pump pushes air and water, its power consumption drops dramatically. So the eheim 1262 that runs my RC180 is listed at drawing 80 watts, but probably does more like 45 with the air/water mixture.

But also, everyone is entitled to their own opinion on this matter, and I respect yours :)

I can only post my opinion through my experiences :)

ditto

I have a Euroreef 6-1, (RS-100), because its been such a great skimmer, and that I am back on track, I am emptying the cup every other day........I have added the gate valve mod to it and had to replace the pump, but that is understandable.

I think I am actually starting to enjoy the "skunky" smell.

ASM and Euroreef are "basicly" the same thing. Unless your hardcore Barebottom uber sterile SPS crazy, any of the popular brands mentioned will work for you.

Just avoid the HOB types and get an in sump type and call it good.

I would also bypass on the AquaC(rap) EV180. Besides what everyone else has commented, it's noisy too. I like my BM160, but the H&S A150 is so much better built, easier to adjust, great customer service and 2 year warranty.

How did you mod your ER?

Which pump did you upgrade to?
