Skimmer

Roger,

Some help please ! :)

I am planning a refugium-type set-up, separate from my main tank (pity, but that's what I can do).....for the cultivation of interesting or useful critters, some algae and, well, because I'm sad. Quite a compact affair, to fit into a small space, so I am interested in the Universal skimmers, about which I have heard good things.

To the extent that they are plankton friendly, I am delighted, of course, but I won't base my decision on that (unless someone can really prove it ! ).

Total volume up to about 200 litres, quite a bit of that displaced with sand and rock, but I guess that is the case with most tanks.

That sand and rock will hopefully be heaving with life, so not a "dead" zone. I want to skim well - this will be a high load system - even tho' many of the target occupants will be detrivores what goes in must come out, and the skimmer is the main weapon. The water volume in the tank will also be low compared to sand/rock......eg 10 to 15 cm depth only so I guess water quality will be an issue.

Which do you recommend ? I have read the Tunze site but, I hope that you are not upset, in most cases we are advised to halve the manufacturer's ratings.

I was thinking of the 0230, but would appreciate your comments. Also, for whatever model you recommend, please would you advise the additional height above the basic "assembled" dimensions required to remove the collection cup in comfort. This is on the site, but either my screen can't resolve well enough to read the diagram or I need to eat more carrots.

Many thanks,

kim

[ps sorry....also would the model be shortly modified (I know that the "skimmate tube" diameters were to be changed) or has that taken place ?]

The 230/3 will change slightly in the next few months. It will likely only be a venturi change on this model but we are still testing this. The 230/3 is my favorite model so I would whole heartedly recommend this one and I believe it would do an outstanding job on a 200L aquarium. I use mine one on a 500L aquarium and it has been running for 3 years.

BTW, the plankton safe feature is real. I have had skeptics run them in vats of phytoplankton and while it collects skimmate the plankton are not removed. The feature makes sense when you see the skimmer. The pump only recirculates the water inside and by diffusion waste enters the clean water inside the skimmer from the dirtier water outside the skimmer. By eliminating the active suction we eliminate the risk to plankton.

Many thanks indeed.

I can see the diffusion argument, and realise that molecules diffuse real fast (just watch a chemical reaction......) - certainly faster than a fat old plankton. Just I'm an old sceptic and habits die hard !

In any case, even without this feature, it is still highly regarded by people whose opinion I trust, and I include yourself.

On the shopping list it goes !
