I've run an EV and an ASM. EV was much quieter than the ASM, but, it's a giant PITA to clean. I also found it way more tempermental as far as maintaining an optimal water level in the main collumn. It however, can be used as an external.

The ASM was noisier with the gate valve mod, a bit of a gurgler. It's why I'm not using one again (that and size). BUT, way easier to adjust, with the mod. And, way easier to clean and maintain.

If you put a gun to my head, I'd go ASM, just because of it's easier clean up.

Anymore info about the build?

My ASM G3 is awesome. Just do the muffler mod and gate valve and you're good to go. Mine is basically silent. Very easy to clean.

Here's a pic of the gate valve mod and muffler mod

I have used an asm G4x for about 6 yrs and added a second asm , a g4xx, several years ago as the system grew and I focused on sps.. They work very well. I did have to replace the impeller on the 4x pump( sedra 9000) last year but I had precipitation problems early on which jammed it up after five years .Other than that no issues with either skimmer. Noise has not been an issue but I have them in the basement so I don't mind the running water sound and never moded them. The air intakes whistle a bit. Adding a CO2 scrubbers which acts like a silencer quiets that considerably.
