Skimoff! Octo 200 Recirc vs MSX200

Ok, i have my modded octo200 recirc that is pulling 32scfh feeding 200gph. I also have the MSX200 pulling 40scfh. They are both getting 500gph raw water from my overflow. I have had the octo200 for a month and the msx for a week. The msx has been broken in with vinegar and run in my qt for a week now. I cleaned out them both very well so lets get a skimmin. Will report back every night around this time. The contenders

Champ and imo will beat the msx- 32scfh recirc 200gph feed pump

Contender-plug and play but not pulling 50scfh in which i'll test at a later date. 40scfh nw one pass 700gph

Let the games begin....

do you happen to have a tds meter??? do you think you can mesure the volume of skimate lets say in a week and take a tds reading for each skimmer.. so we can get a amount to tds ratio???

lol, a tds meter in skimmate does diddly squat! Unless you skim really really wet i guess. If you have zero tds going in.....

Well it s like this. My octo200 with a 4" neck and 32scfh is getting fed with a 200gph pump and the msx200 is pulling 40scfh and pushing 750ish gph out the skimmer. So i'm getting over 3x's the dwell time with the original octo. Ofcourse 99% of people don't mod there octo like i did : ) But i'm really pushing it to see how well it does.

Both had a bit of skim in them when i checked the smorning. They were nearly identical in how much as well.

@luke33

You know I'm tagging along for this one. Since you know I'm looking for a nice and affordable skimmer where I don't have to sell one of my kids.

You can cut the skimmet with R/O water and tack a TDS reading,say 60ml of skimmet to a gallon of water.

now thats a good idea.. lets say we set the standard of diluting the skimmate to 1 part skimmate to 10 part ro/di water then tds?? we will still have to total volum of skimmate collected and by dilution... we get to know which one is dirtier..

good call!!!

I'm going to pass on using my TDS meter. Feel free to use yours to test your skimmate, but i'd rather not dip mine into sewage or diluted sewage. I don't think a tds meter can detect that high anyhow. It'll be based on volume, color, smell and solids.

taggin in on this one. Gotta give love to the Octopus tho ;) I have a slightly modded self done recirc 150 Octo....and that thing is a BEAST!

The diluted skimate idea sounds interesting to me. It may be a way to get some real idea as to what kind of skimmer is doing its job. I dont mean to say its going to provide precise info as there are way to many variables to deal with. It may though give us a crude benchmark.

You would have to dillute the crap out of it though. I don't think you guys get the tds idea. It measures ppm. If i dump a cup of skimmate into a gallon it would be off the charts so your talking an eyedropper, a few drops and then measure. With skimmate, you never know what your going to get, one drop might be super high and the next not nearly as high. The only way to test the difference would be analyzing the skimmate in a lab, seeing % of amino's, protein's and what not. But then it would be the same argument, is it good this got taken out or not? : ) So i'm going to leave it up to smell, volume, color and taste(jk). lol, but if anyone wants to test the tds theory thats something to try.
