Hi, name is Kevin from Brisbane - Australia
This is my first sps tank that was setup 1 year and 3 months ago.
It is my first test tank before moving on with a better system.
The aim was to test out equipment, chemicals and general learning on how to keep a successful tank with minimal maintenance.

If I haven't bore you yet, you have done well.

I am shocked you haven't gotten more comments! Corals
Look very happy and healthy. Do you have a full tank shot?

Thanks, probably still asleep or haven't noticed.
I can get some full tank shots later during the weekend and update here.
Photos are not the best, I have just noticed it came out too dark, it didn't look like that when I was looking on the DSLR camera's screen.

Looks great Kevin, i agree with Mike - definitely ready for the upgrade mate. What T5's are you running if i may ask ? Why do you dose strontium ?

Looking forward to some brighter pics of your corals :)

Hi Andrew,
I am using 2 geismaann actinic tubes and 2 Ati coral plus tubes.
I am about to do a change in Dec as they are 12 months old.
Replacing them with all geismaann brand. 2 x super actinic and 2 x super purple.
Strontium because my system use about 5 ppm every month.
Water change monthly 15% is my current routine. But once I find the right fatty acids, omega oil, hufa and trace elements liquid... There will be no water change as I have the full package for the corals.
Hoping it can be done for the long term success of sps corals.

I've been in Brisbane for 4 days in 1994. It was an international meeting. The city is very nice and, as Andrew, you are another Aussie that is sorrounded by Acros. Lucky guys !!! . The meeting organizer setup a one day trip to the coral barrier reef. I was speachless with what I saw snorkeling. We went to a coral mix site and later to a fully SPS site (mostly blue acros). I remember it like if it had been done last week.

Please, a full tank picture will be great. Corals looks well but pictures are a little dark. But nevertheless is looks that you already have a great tank there.

Can I ask why you would rather have the difficulty of measuring and dosing all those components, instead of doing a simple WC every weekend or at least a couple of times per month.

Cheers
Daniel

Hello Daniel,
A good question you have asked about the simple WC every weekend.
It isn't too hard to setup a dosing pump and measured dosage/usage for your corals. All solutions mixed from dry powder ingredients.
Set and forget, not quiet but it is pretty close. Monitor for faulty dosing pump and clogging of feed in hose.
It took me a long time (6 months) to test and be confident enough to put these 2 liquids on the dosing pump. Potassium Nitrate liquid and Potassium Phosphate liquid.
You can see if there is a problem, I could virtually nuke a tank with NO3 and PO4. :eek2:

There are a few pest issues I am sorting out - Aptasia pest - it started with 1 and 6 months later, I have hundreds. Using Kalk paste does work, but when the kalk paste lands on another corals, I get bleaching on that spot. Sometimes it blows off from the aptasia, and it can kill off a whole branch of near by sps if it didn't set hard on the aptasia.
Now I have introduced an army of peppermint shrimps to take on that task.
Hopefully no more mishaps from me going forward. :headwally:

Sorry about the reflection of my windows - this FTS was taken during midday today. That is the best I can do for now.

Hey Kevin, your tank looks great!
I love the top coral of post 14. Beautiful. What is that?
With the AIO Pellets, AND dosing n and p, how often are you testing for these two?
How much AIO do you use and in what type of reactor?
I'm not sure why you use pellets and dose both n and p...it is clear by the photos that you have a good system going but couldn't you simplify things by just reducing the flow through or quantity of your AIO pellets?
What is your target level for n and p?
Thanks!

Hi Matt,
That top coral of post 14 is acropora echinata. It has that much PE out all day long. I have others saying that isn't natural at all.
Once a week testing for P and N.. sometimes laps to every fortnight if I am lazy / forgot.
AIO bio pellets is running in Bubble Magnus BP100 reactor. Tornado type spin.
I rather not reduce the pellets or can't reduce the flow. I rather it has plenty and all I do is add N and P to offset the consumption.
It is fairly balance, as I keep it at around 300ml of pellets running all the time.
Topping it up every 3 months or so.
Current target N is 10 ppm and P is 0.1 ppm. Just testing the water at this level for the past 4 to 5 months.
It can't be true right... others say the same too... but it can be colourful even at this higher nutrients.
Forget about getting pastel colours - I know I can't or not chasing that at all.

Going to reduce the N back down to 2ppm and P to 0.05ppm by new year.
Hopefully I can extract a bit more colours from my sps - which I know there are some left.

I need some assistance with Strawberry Short cake acro.
My SSC have lost all its green glowing base colour and is now red / brown.
It is currently resting just above 5cm from sand bed.
Should I place it back towards the top to get the glowing green back? :o
