Slightly Wide 500 Gallon Reef Tank

Glad to hear mom is better. And totally understandable to delay a fish tank build. Now the build is a priority due to its natural nature to calm and relax us. :D

Incredible build so far. Good on you for taking such good care of your mother, I hope that her recovery continues.

I think the most critical things with rockwork are:
1. Of course, the looks, and remembering that less is more
2. The flow. Try not to build lots of walls that will eliminate flow, unless you want a lot of powerheads.

Speaking of powerheads, where do you plan to mount yours? I have a cube tank that is viewable from all 4 sides and I have a heck of a time locating the powerheads so that they dont disrupt the view badly (vortechs cannot go close to the surface, or the substrate).

Keep up the great work! Please dont skimp on sump/filtration/equipment pics, those are my favorite part.

Oh one idea too, once the emergency drain pipe enters the uniseal on the sump, end it there so that it ends above water level, that way you can hear it when it is flowing.

I like the vectra L1 a lot for a return, works pretty well, though there are other awesome options too.

Will you use a substrate or go bare-bottom?

What kind of corals do you like? SPS? LPS? all?

Nice build! Sorry to hear about your mom but glad she is doing better. I'm just south of you. PM me if you need help with anything!

Jay if you ever need any help I am up by Kingwood and about to start on my large reef tank build this year. Was curious who built your sump. There are a several large reefs up your way if your ever looking for corals to help fill that thing and I have alot of high end sps that I am growing out for my large reef if your ever interested in trading down the line.

Finally got a little more done yesterday. I built a temporary stand for the tank so that I could work more freely on the ceiling above the tank. Because of the weight of the tank I needed to build the stand the same height so that I could just push the 800lbs back and forth.

After the tank was moved over I lined the whole ceiling and everything that will be inside the canopy area with wood. This should help with the next step which is adding the white Formica as the Formica needs good contact to stick.

Thanks man. I look forward to seeing your build.

My sump was built by Modular Marine and he did a solid job for a really good price. Even delivered it to my house even though he's like 4 hours away. I can't say enough good things about my experiences with him.

Yea definitly. Once I get things going and I get the tank stabilized I'm sure I'll be giving you a call to trade.

That's a seriously large tank:) You must have a very patient wife, lol! I couldn't convince mine to let me have a tank in the main part of the house, let alone one that big. I'm stuck in the basement, which is actually okay because I can pretty much do whatever I want down there.
Anyway, nice work, can't wait to see it running

Haha she actually loves the tank but is super frustrated about how long it's taken to get to this point because she wants to start picking out fish and coral.
