small hippo tang scratching

I have a small 2'' hippo tang and 3'' yellow tang in qt with cp.The hippo is doing quiet abit of scratching against the pvc.No spots are on the fish.I have also dosed prazipro as well.Could it just be a itch or something else.They eat great and act normal.

How long have they been in QT? Is the fish targeting a certain area, like the gills, when it scratches?

It has been in qt for 1week.Looks like mostly the top dorsal and side.

Sometimes fish will continue scratching even after whatever was ailing them is gone. For example, I think Crypto trophonts will sometimes leave scarring that will continue to irritate a fish's skin even after the cysts are gone.

That being said, I would continue treating with CP for at least 3 more weeks. Longer if the scratching persists. Maybe also bump it up to 80mg/gal if you haven't already.

I went to check the fish in qt,hippo tang came out acting weird,Overnite it had developed red spots on the tail area almost like blood under the skin.It was breathing hard ,and in a matter of about a minute it was dead.The yellow tang looks and is eating normal.I have no idea what caused this.

Sounds like Septicemia, a very lethal gram-negative bacterial infection. It can also be viral. Either way, mortality rate is very high for Septicemia - once it got to the point where you noticed symptoms, there wasn't much you could do. I'm sorry for your loss.

It's a tough call, as Septicemia isn't always contagious. But on the other hand, by the time you see symptoms on him it will probably be too late.

I would probably go the safe route and start treating with antibiotics. You can use Furan-2 or Minocycline (aka Maracyn 2). However, keep in mind if it's viral there's nothing you can do if he gets it.

Might not be a bad idea. I've never used CP in conjunction with antibiotics before. Maybe pose that question on the CP thread; I'm sure alprazo would know the answer.

I haven't gotten a response from him yet,but I went ahead and done several water changes and dosed the furan 2.Will keep this for about a week and then go back to 40mg/g for 2 weeks.
