Smallest grouper

Fish from the anthias subfamily/genus are in the family of serranidae. Serranidae is the family that includes cephalopholis and epinephilus (SP?) which are the real deal holyfield groupers like miniata, queensland, whitespotted, argus, etc.
So technically if you get one of the bigger anthias, like a square or squareback, you got yourself a mini grouper.

well im rambling now, theres also hamlets like indigo or barred. They get a lil size to them and other perches that are relatives as well. genus Cromileptes like panther but thats 2'6" max size
Saddleback grouper - plectropomus genus - over a foot as well
Just ranting, im a grouper fanatiic and if you need any type i can get you one, im in new york, PM me if youd like to talk further

what about a marine betta? they get about 7-8in or so. i have one. they are usually in a dark place in the tank. mine took 6 months before it was not people shy

Spotted Grouper (Epinephelus summana) is the smallest I commonly see available as far as the more true grouper type they top out around 10"-12". Kind of like a poor mans Marine Betta which aren't in the same family as groupers by the way though are closely related.

isnt that the grammistes ? i believe its a soapfish, that when stressed or harrassed emits a toxic slime from its coat that wipes out tanks

there is an E. fasciatus, but i dont know much other than what it looks like at a lil less than a foot
