I was in my LFS(and RC sponser) Aquatouch today and saw the smallest tang ive ever seen in my life... Its a Thomsoni Tang... Has anyone seen a tang this small in a aquarium before or is it just me?

Yep, my brother has been raising an Atlantic blue tang since it was the size of a finger nail. I've also seen koles, yellows, scopas, hippos etc this small.

Nice! .... Is there anything special I should do for this guy? I was told to feed often when this small.... Is that it?

Feed often and don't do too much to stress him out :) They've got a fast metabolism and not much of a fat reserve when they're that small. Feed frequently and he'll grow up nicely for you :)

Also keep an eye on overflows. I've bought, on separate occasions, two baby Snowcasso clowns. Both were as small as that little guy, if not smaller. Both ended up in my overflows because they could slip through the slats right into the overflow.

Thanks for the tips! I'll keep an eye on the overflow with my fingers crossed that he doesn't want to explore. Is there anyway to guestimate the age of this guy? Thanks agian!

I used to have a kole tang that was about an inch or so. Started it out in a 14g cube for a few months before moving it. He couldn't stay too long in a tank that size.

I might be with Cantonese on this one....does look like a Duss to me...

Anyway, I think you know what you've got to do. Like you said, it's a small fish and will require frequent small feedings.

Best of luck. I can't think of a much more rewarding experience in this hobby than raising a fish from such a small size!

Its hard to say at That size, I don't know if its the picture or not but it looks like the scalpel might be white. If it is, there's a good chance it could be a duss, which IMO would be better if you have the space for it. Just have to wait and see when it grows up.

The shape doesn't look like Thompsoni, but at that size, tough to say...I would defer to Aquatouch on this, not your average LFS....If they say A. thompsoni, I would wager that's what it is.

Thanks for the kind words, and possible species!

Which ever it is, im just hoping that he does good and thrives to grow into a "normal" sized tang. When i was in the store i asked how long it would take to get big enough to put with my Lavander, and they said id should be maybe2-3" within 9-12 months... Long time from now, but like skibum9884 said, i think ill get alot of satisfaction if i can grow this little guy up! haha ... About which species it is, i agree that LFS's will put incorrect names on stuff, but like Kirkaz mentioned, Aquatouch is pretty good with rare and exotic fish... I take there word for what it is but i certianally wont rule out the dussumieri... Anyway ill try to post some pictures later down the road when he gets bigger in hopes for a positive ID.... Eitherway im stoked! :D ... Agian thanks for the input and kind words!! Im gonna try to take a vid of his today when i get home from work, so if i do ill post it up!

my lfs used to have hippos the size of a nickel. they were the cutest thing i ever saw. At the time they were only about ten bucks.

now the same size tang is about 40.

Thanks everyone.... I love this little guy haha... Heres some more pics and a very short video... Doesnt like to be filmed so everytime the camera came out, he would hide in a birdsnest colony...

His colors are getting more vivid and i constantally catch him nibblin on the algea on the bottom of the tank... He eats like a pig!! I feed frozen once a day and pellets 2 times a day... Seems to munch it all down...
