smoking xenia

I have always have success with every other corals except pumping xenia. For some reason I just can't keep xenia alive in my tank. I thought it was the chemistry, the lighting, the temp...etc. But everything else in my tank is doing fine: sps, frogspawn, toadstool, kenya tree, zoa, numerous mushrooms and 6 tridacna clams. I decided to give Xenia a try again last night and by this morning it was smoking, literally, there is purple cloud of smoke coming from the base of the xenia. I acclimated them for more than 2 hours... What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?

That sounds funky...in another xenia thread, many of us agree that it grows like crazy. You may be one of the folks who have trouble.

I've never ever noticed my xenia smoking though. The closest thing I've ever seen is when I am fragging and can't get a clean cut, sometimes when the tissue tears it looks like it's kind of smoking. So my thought was that maybe somehow it's being torn, by a wayward crab or something else. I'm not a xenia guru, so don't take that as gospel.

Steven, I seem to have the same issue with pumping Xenia. I can keep anything else just fine, except for Xenia. I have also tried acclimating them for very long periods of time, but to no avail. I just an't figure it out.

Xenia use more nutrients from the water than most other corals, it may be that your water is just too "clean".

Most likely the smoking was caused by a tear or some other mechanical damage. Sometimes they can spontaneously dissolve from stress. Did you purchase it locally or did you have it shipped? Xenia are notorious for not shipping well. Your overall poor success rate may be because of very clean water, but in this case (the smoking) sounds like trauma.

I have heard rumor that xenia do better in lower water temp. I keep my water in the high end of 70's sometimes it'll creep up to 82. would that have anything to do with my failure with xenia? What temp does everyone else with lots of xenia keep?

i keep a whole lot of xenia in my 190g , they propgate so quickly in my tank. i cut them right at the stem all the time, and i guess thats why i have so much. I keep the tank at 77-79 degrees i dont really think it has to do with the temperature as much as how much nutirents are in the tank.
