these were on my front glass in a pattern a snail would lay... but they're shaped like a sesame seed but about 1/2 the size and full of white eggs... any ideas?

thanks,
joe

I've heard snails tend to lay them in circles and stuff, while fish lay in small clumps, but I dunno. A stock list (including snails and fish) mght help people that know more than me :)

Snail eggs definitely. I've had several different hatches. Mine looked exactly like the picture. Inside a clear half bubble.

fish:
2 ocellaris clowns

inverts
6x nassarius
3x scarlet hermit
6x astrea
2x trochus

i did some research and i'm thinking they might be nassarius eggs. is there anything i should do in particular? im not sure i want another 300 nassarius snails lol...

I would agree they are nassarius. No worries about them surviving. Tha majority of snails available to us rarely spawn successfully in our tanks. The larval stages require quantities of foods which arent generally found in enough abundance, and the lengthy plantonic stage ensures that if they dont starve they will become food for corals, fish, get smashed by pumps and powerheads or get removed by filter devices.

If your spawning snails are successful it would be good news for the hobby, there are people trying really hard to find successful reproducers and learn how to successfully rear the harder ones.

I believe the snails that have reproduced in my tank are nassarius, but they've never gone into the sand bed as nassarius are listed as doing, so I'm not sure. Mine seem to mostly clean the glass and the top of the sand on occasion.

I sure wish the references gave through the glass pictures of their feet as well as shell shots.

Yes if the survive you may have 300 grain of sand sized snails. Congratulations.

My first hatch is reaching pink pencil eraser size at approx. 7 months. The second hatch is about 1/2 that size. I also still have a lot of small grain of rice sized snails as well. So I either missed a third hatch or some just haven't grown as well. I'd guess-timate that I've gone from 30-40 to 100-120.

When checking the tank before I started this post I noticed I have a couple more egg pods. I get the impression that there are 7-20 eggs per pod. Oops, I've just checked again, make that 33 pods. I'm fairly sure there were only 2 pods on the glass last night.

Don't know if it makes any difference, but most of the egg pods are on the end of the tank that gets a little natural sun just before sun set. I set the tank up in January, added the clean up crew in February and noticed the 1st egg pods in March. My tank doesn't get any direct sun light in the summer and I haven't noticed any egg pods for the last few months. A clue?

Odd - nassarius are scavengers and wouldn't normally find much to eat on the glass. Mine spend their time under the sand with their syphon sticking out.

Do you have a picture?

No picture. I've got a really old digital, but it won't zoom enough or go macro focus. I'm about to buy a new one. I believe I'll get a canon G9, but I want to hold it first and they aren't sold in the local stores yet.

I agree that they may not be nassarius because of not going under the sand. I'll have to check on my clean up crew order to see what I got.

The largest has a long narrow foot (they all do), a smooth shell that spirals to a small knob, the shell is pale with black stripes (with brown edging) that run length wise, the syphon is very short, say a 1/8" or a little less. They drop off the glass to go after flake that has settled on the sand bed.

I'll search the web later to see id I can find a picture that matches or comes close.

That looks like them. Columbellids huh. I'm pretty sure my clean up crew didn't list those. I'll have to check out their info.

Thanks David!
