snail id please

i just got these from a asian market not sure if they are safe or not so before i put any in my main tank i need to id them.

those dont really look like them alot. mine dont have white bodies. maybe periwinkle snails?

these ones i have dont have a siphon tube. and mine have a circle opening not at all like a slit.

Hmm, I see I didn't look at the pile of snails closely enough, lol. You're probably right, maybe Littorina littorea (all the ones I have are yellow, or variations of black and yellow, but some pics on the net show black ones). I know the littorinids are often eaten in other parts of the world, but I don't know of anyone eating Ilyanassa....Since you've ID'ed them yourself, you've probably read by now that they are vegetarians. They won't hurt anything in your tank, although they may not stay in the water, and the temp isn't likely to be ideal for them. Still, they'll probably live longer in your tank than they would have if someone else had bought them for supper.

one site says they are very hardy and can live in freezing cold to super heated tidepools but your probably right not for long they already are crawling to the top out of the water lol. you have probably already seen this id site but this is them. thanks to you for giving me the scientific name i wouldnt have found it. http://www.gastropods.com/5/Shell_995.shtml

they are periwinkles, they are found here on long island, ny
