i found this in my tank tonight. i think it is a nassarius but not sure the shell seems different but the 'body' resembles a nassarius, any input is appreciated
This is a buccinid whelk, Engina histrio (Reeve, 1846). Many authors have considered this to be a synonym of Engina alveolata, but Guido Poppe and others consider it to be a distinct species. I agree with Guido. They may live side by side with the orange-and-black Engina alveolata, but they only get about half as large, and they never intergrade. If they were young E. alveolata, there should be some transitional forms, but I've never found any that weren't distinctly one species or the other.
