snail id please

i found this in my tank tonight. i think it is a nassarius but not sure the shell seems different but the 'body' resembles a nassarius, any input is appreciated

Doesn't look like a nassarius to me either. From melev's info, I'd say a whelk also.
 
I have a few species of Nassarius, Tongan and Atlantic species none look like that.

I would agree that it is a species of whelk.
 
It's definitely not a cone snail or any species of Nassarius. I'm not sure what it actually is though, beyond the fact that it is a whelk for sure.
 
This is a buccinid whelk, Engina histrio (Reeve, 1846). Many authors have considered this to be a synonym of Engina alveolata, but Guido Poppe and others consider it to be a distinct species. I agree with Guido. They may live side by side with the orange-and-black Engina alveolata, but they only get about half as large, and they never intergrade. If they were young E. alveolata, there should be some transitional forms, but I've never found any that weren't distinctly one species or the other.
