That statement makes me doubt the stomatella ID. The shell on a stomatella is tiny. A The snail looks like a slug with a piece of fingernail on it's back. I have never seen the shell in any of my tanks and I know I have stomatella and I know some have died.

I think I just happened to look at the tank at the right time; one of my nassarius snails was on the rock. Concerned that something might be wrong I picked him up and put him on the sand, and he was holding the shell. The shell was very small, looked a lot bigger when on the living snail; But what you describe a stomatella looking like is what seemed to be in my tank. Do hermit crabs go after that type of snail? I have small red legged hermits in the tank with some snails atm.
