Snails and tank transfer

I was wondering if I could use the tank transfer method on all new inverts and snails to keep ich out of my tank? I don't exactly have the ability to QT them for 6 weeks at a time but switching them back and forth in a bucket would be easy. Any opinions on the subject? If 12 days of tank transfer works for fish (did it to my clowns and it worked perfectly) then where could this go wrong for snails?

No. Tank transfer does not pertain to snails or other invertebrates because they cannot be hosts for cryptocaryon.

But people talk about getting it in their tanks due to not QTing them so would this be a good in preventing it? I no they don't carry it but it's in the water that they come in and you have to get that off then some how.

I say do it. If those snails or other inverts came out of a system with ich in it, then you run the risk of transferring the ich from the water you bring them home in. If you are confident they weren't in water shared with any fish, then you're probably safe.

tank transfer won't work on snail. if the ich is encrusted on the shell, it could be up to 72 days before it pop offs. Well that's my thinking anyway.

I don't think it can in crust in the shell because that's what it does in fishes skin then hatches. I think that the way that get in is the water and the water left over in the shell of just on your hand as you put it in the tank. So in theory changing all the water would get rid of any free swimmers and the eggs floating in the water right?

You must know the life cycle of ich to understand why tank transfer will NOT work on snails. A separate qt must be set up for incerts and leave them fishless 8-12 weeks ( depending on how sure you want to be.

I was thinking of the stage where they have falling off the fish and encrusted themselve to a surface. It could have encrusted itself on a shell and be there up to 72 days.

I agree with Lou,any inverts need to be qt for 8 to 12 weeks.Just as you would do liverock comeing out of a tank with ich.I have a 75 setup just like any reef tank would be,I only put corals and inverts in it for 12 weeks.

I would ask this question to people who have mastered disease prevention and treatment. I can almost assure you that people who have disease free tanks and fish DID NOT QT snails and other inverts for 8-12 wks

Not so, anything wet gets qt'd before hitting my displays.

Not sure were you guys read up to 72 days as a Tomont? What I have read on many sites is that once the ick leaves its host it becomes a Protomont and will crawl around for 3 - 8 hours B4 attaching to a surface then its begins to encyst. The Tomont will lie in wait between 3 -28 days B4 it burst, becoming free swinging called a Theronte looking for a host. And I agree you must QT everything wet unless you are sure the item came from a none fish environment for 28 days

This is what I go by,this sentence as always stuck in my head.

Maximum tomont excystment time was 72 days at 25C. (Colorni)[/QUOTE]
