snails, snails and more snails

I'm over run with little slug like snails in my tank... should I try and diminish these with something that will eat them? They look like slugs with little shells, china hat looking shells. I probably have 30 or more various sizes. Our tank looks like it has little floaties all over in the water. They range from the size of a pinhead to maybe my pinky nail in size. Do these have any benefit?

I'll try tommorow. Richard just cleaned the sides of the tank and knocked them all down. I started my tank back in March, and were getting ready to start making it more then it is. We haven't had alot of time or money to invest, but with winter coming we figured we'd refocus our time on it. It's truly bare with just some live rock, one fire clown (mean one at that) and 2 anenomes. And tons of snails. We lost alot of fish when getting acclamated, and haven't reinvested. I learned a hard lesson with where you buy. Lost alot to black ich, I think from a yellow tang we purchased. I peek in here alot and know Adam pretty well, figured it was time to get in here and take advantage of the awesome help this group provides.

Glad to have you back! I am sure you know this but most all of the stores around here are notorious having fish diseases in their tanks. It is unfortunate but it is just to risky IMO to buy fish from these stores. I like to support local businesses but introducing fish diseases is not an option. There is a new store in Syracuse that you could checkout or many of us just buy from liveaquaria.com

It is hard to say without a picture but those snails you are describing sound like stomatella snails. They are good snails and if you have too many you may be able to trade some at a frag meet for frags. I have a bunch and I think their cool. Checkout this page...

Hey I have a bunch of snails in my tank as well. I was told that they are coppa (not sure of spelling) pods. They look like the ones that you called (Can't remember the name), that were the sluglike snails. I have a ton of them as well.

Just out of curiosity who told you that your snails are called copepods? Copepods are not snails at all they are tiny crustaceans and they don't look like slugs at all IMO.

Here is a photo of a stomatella snail...

and here is a close up photo of a copepod (they are very small)...

That is absolutely what they are!! To a T. And glad to know thier beneficial before the husband started fishing. If I ever make it to another frag meet I would be more then happy to part with some.
Richard and I went to the local one back in the spring, we weren't there long, because the information was a little overwhelming, we felt way out of league. I'm very open to advice and learning, but my other half is a little more stubborn. His concept is get it and wing it. Hence the money down the drain. Thanks again...and you'll be hearing more from me!

Rich at Creature Comforts told me that they were the copepods. I took one of them in in a bag and that is what he said. They are the slug looking thing like on the top picture. I also have a bunch of those lobster looking things but they are really tiny. The slug looking things just keep multiplying left and right. The copepods are quite prevelent but like I said they are tiny.

By the way nate. I was told by anthony aand dave that I really needed to see your setup to appreciate what a tank is supposed to look like. Mine is a 150 gallon and is very bare. Guess ya gotta start somewhere though.....

Hey Craig... like I said the other night. You can't trust much what they say over there at CC. Rick especially doesn't know what he's talking about. I think only guy there that somewhat knows what he's talking about is Tom.... and even at then he's only about half right. I really think that if anyone is going to work or operate a pet store should do some major reading of books and forums like these. Especially if they're going to offer advice.

Yeah i know. I went there today and his corals looked like ****. I was surprised cause normally they look pretty good. Hey just so everyone knows Howie over at livingstons is getting into zoo's. They told me that they have a supplier out of California where they can get corals cheap. And one of the things they mentioned were hyper colored frags. Whatever that may be. JUst thought youd like to know

Haha, well obviously Rick is wrong. It is not an uncommon occurrence. It is funny too because he once told me that you could follow him around for a year and not be able to learn everything he knows about saltwater animals. Really??!!! The guy doesn't even know the difference between a copepod and a snail

I feel kind of bad ragging on him but he kind of has this one coming to him

(By the way I think Rick is a nice guy, I just recommend getting a second opinion when it comes to his advice. That goes for anyone's advice really...)

Gee awhile ago my daughter called Livingstons trying to find me some t5 bulbs (I sat beside her looking up other shop #'s because of the weird length) and they told her she'd have to bring it in because they never heard of t5's:eek: So I hope they have some sort of desent lighting for corals:rolleyes:

What is a good site to look at photos, I have other unidentified things in the tank that i would like to identify. Especially a catepillar looking thing with a red dot on it's body. Looks almost furry. I tried to take a picture, but I'm having trouble down sizing so I can upload it on here.

I think they last time i was there they were using NO lighting...lol...i would take everyone's advice that gives it in the local shops with a grain of salt. deff ask others before coming to a conclusion from any of their thoughts.

I personally like to use google image search. I also like...

http://wetwebmedia.com for info on lots of things and if you want to search reef central without paying for an account you can always type this into google...

site:http://reefcentral.com

then put a space and what you want to search for. For example...

site:http://reefcentral.com awesome nwrogers

It actually works :eek1:
