Was wondering what are some names of snails that eat clams? Just bought a new clam last week and did great for about two days, then started to close up. Got up early this morning and look at tank and had about 7 large snails on clam. They had long snouts. I have seen a bounch of the shells in my sump but they are dead. So I believe they have reproduced in the tank at sometime. I tried clams about 2 years ago and they did great for about 5 months and then died. So i'm trying to figure out what i can do to keep them. Also depending on what type of snails I have how do i get rid of them?

Thanks

can you post a pic of the snails, Whelks are clam eaters. pagojoe is the person to ask about snail id try pm'ing a pic to him and see what he thinks.

If a clam is dead or dieing most snails will eat it. Your clam may have been having a rough go from the stress of shipping.

can you post a pic of the snail?? from the long snout they sound like a nassarius or possibly a whelk as mentioned above.

Ordered three clams togeather. I have lost two but the third is doing fine. I think the snails were eating a dead clam. After some searching I think the snails were nassarius. What is the rate of death in new clams? Is it common to have new ones die?
Just don't want to buy any more if it is fairly common to have new ones die.

Thanks

It is not common to have new clams die
can you post a pic of the remaining clam?
where did you buy them from?
how did you acclimate them?
what are your water paramaters?
what kind of fish and inverts do you have? Crabs and shrimp
what lighting do you have?
what kind of suppliments do you use and how do you add them?
what kind of clams do you have and what were the 2 that died?
how big are they?

Pic's would help out alot

No suppliments, tank is around 7 years old, been doing 40gal water changes every week for the last 5 weeks to get nitrate down. I'm switching fowlr tank to more corals and such.

Is dotyback clam safe? I thought he could be the problem but have sat back and watched for long time and have never seen him nip. The clams that died one derasa and one crocea. The one that is still living is a crocea. Will take pictures tuesday.

Thanks

Your alk is way low if you are measureing in dkh, you need to raise that up to 8.0. If you are measureing in meq/L you should be fine. what is your mag?
