I'm planning a trip in mid december to jamacia and was wondering if there are any worthwhile spots to go for a inexperianced diver? I'm staying at a resort that offers training for a dive, but if they don't have a reef that is worth seeing I'd rather do something else. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Being the first time, regardless of any good reefs doesn't matter. The whole experience will be worth while anyways. I did my first dive in Hawaii and it was over whelming.

Sadly Jamaica is rapidly becoming the poster child for reef destruction. Much of the coral habitat is dead. But when you get there maybe the local dive shops have some sites that are still worth seeing.

I was thinking of going to Jamaica for my honeymoon at one of the Sandals resorts. Has anyone ever stayed there and gone scuba diving there? I wouldn't want to go if all the reefs are being depleated of coral and fish.

If it is just a honeymoon it's ok, but if you want to go diving and see nice reefs I would avoid Jamaica. There are Sandals resorts is a lot of other places, the Bahamas comes to mind and there is much better diving there. Unfortunately, Jamaica and Haiti are the worst places in the Caribbean for diving.

I am a 9 time return e of sandals Montego bay. Great resort dive staff is great I have over 75 dives at this resort you will not be disapointed with the diving there lots of reefs and the wall is impressive dove other locations around the carribean including aruba and dominican and jamacia is still one of my favorites sandals is an ultra inclusive and diveing is included and is done comfortably and profesionally if you have any questions on this resort in particular PM me

Please do Goby-Wan Kenobi, we a re pretty excited to go on a trip like this and want it to go without a hitch. Let me know which one you stayed and the pro and cons once you get back. Enjoy your trip

I just returned from my Sandals vacation at the Royal Caribean. I did do the sucba dive and it was fantastic. If you go and love reefs you have to do it. Don't get me wrong I was terrified. At least at the beginning. The instructer does a fanastic job of teaching you what to do to be safe. If you need any more info let me know. I suggest doing it.

I am glad to hear everything went great. If you have any pics please post them. Any recommendations or tips for staying at Sandals. I booked my reservations already for end of April / beginning of May.

I'll be stopping in Jamaica in March for a cruise (ack!) and was hoping to get in a couple of dives. We'l be stopping in Ochos Rios for the day. Our cruise orginally had a diving excursion listed, but when I just went to book it, it was no longer listed...

Can anyone suggest a decent 2-tank dive out of the Ochos Rios area..? I would prefer a wreck if at all possibe.

I wasn't expecting much for the diving when I went to Couples Negril last fall. I had just got back from a tour in Afghanistan so I was looking for a place were I could sleep in, drink and eat alot, and maybe wake up in time for an occasional dive. Honestly though, the diving was better than I expected. Most of the large fish are gone but there is plenty of small stuff. The reefs were not pristine but better than most describe. Negril is not on par with a Cozumel or Belize but IMO its better than Key Largo. The easy current and super warm water make for a very relaxing dive. I logged 7 dive in 10 days. Very low by most standards but I came home relaxed. ;) If your looking for a great laid back vacation with a bit of diving I think Jamaica is perfect. It hard to beat the beaches and selection of AIs. If your looking for a pure Dive trip well then there are much better options.

We went to Jamaica for our honeymoon 2 years ago. I didn't get to go diving, but did some snorkling.
I will say that the glass bottom boat was fun, not much for reef, but tons of fish there.

Tim,

Where else is that cruise stopping? Might be some better dive options on other Islands ;)

Grand Cayman, and I'm already registered & paid for that one! ;)

Caymans is one of my favorites :D Best on Grand Cayman is the East End and North Wall. Though, anything through the cruise ship is likely to be around the port or the Stingray City, still nice, but the truly spectacular stuff.
