Snowflake Eel Aggressive Feeding Video

This is a very poor quality video of me feeding my Snowflake Eel. He is in a temporary home with his tankmates for a few weeks while his new home is built!

I thought I would post this because I keep seeing threads about whether or not snowflakes eat tankmates and how aggressive they are. I have had this guy for about a year and he has gotten more and more aggressive. He is over 2 feet now and quite thick. This video was taken after he HAD eaten in the morning but still wanted more.

I do not usually feed him like this (just dropping food randomly into tank) but to show how aggressive he is I did. Plus it was hard to use the feeding stick and still film with my camera phone!

Sorry about the shaky filming and length but towards the end he really gets crazy.

I know the tank is small but like I said, its a few weeks...I do not want to hear about how I need to upgrade! They were most recently just in a 180G.

Right around the 1:20 mark he gets pretty aggressive!

Cool video... I'll see if I can get a video of mine up on here shortly. I think mine is bigger than yours (hehe... the eel that is), but mine is more mild-mannered... better trained? I only feed meaty foods off of a feeding stick after I have placed smaller food bits at the opposit end of the tank. The fish feed at one end and my Snowflake gently comes in to take the meaty chunks off my tongs. I have only ever had a problem when my Henni's would attempt to steal food of the tongs.... or by free feeding such as you did.

Cool vid!

Well I rarely feed this way. I always use tongs for him and he isnt that bad but he still rips the food off the stick! I think it really depends on the eel. Mine has always been very aggressive. When I got him, he was already a foot and a half. Now hes maybe a little over two feet. Last time I tried to measure him it was right around 2'. Anyways, I fed him like that to show how he will bite at anything that moves when he smells food. I will not be feeding that way again, as I thought he was going to come out of the top!

You know whats funny about that video too is that he ate in the morning a little bit! Its not like hes starving or anything.

I also find it amazing that even with bad eye sight, he can strike at food so quickly but the puffer who has much better eye sight has food hitting him on the head and he can't find it!

That damsel is a pain! I bought that temporary tank off of a guy for real cheap but his one condition was that I had to take the damsel. I really did not want it but he insisted. Im not stuck with it. I do not want to put it in my display when the new tank is set up either. I have no idea what to do with it...I think I secretly hope it gets eaten by the eel but so far its been fine!

I'd leave the damsel be? I used two small blue damsels with yellowtails with my snowflake as an experiment. I think the damsels are too small, too quick, and somewhat intelligent enough to stay out of the way of the eel. I don't think the Snowflake would stalk the fish, if anything an accidental bite.

I don't think damsels actually 'sleep' like a tang or wrasse would. Day or night mine's always about. Either that, or it's sleeping with both eyes open given the eel.

I named my damsels Dinner and Dessert because of skepticism of how they'd manage with the eel. But 15mos later and they're still around.

That video is pretty cool but you would be an aggresive eater too if you had to try to get food with a porcer in the tank. It is kind of funny how the food is floating by the porcers head. It seems like the ones I have seen being fed at the lfs go bonkers on anything that hits the tank especially goldfish.

How big of a tank is that...im contemplating getting a baby snowflake for my 24g

That tank is a 33G but only a temp home for them until their 125G is set up. They were in a 180G but I had to downsize. Based on my eel, it would outgrow a 24G in about 8 months to a year. Make sure you have a bigger tank for him to go to. As you can see in the video, he is very cramped in there :(

I had an eel that made yours look like a sissy. I was scared to even stick my hand in the tank, seriously. He was only a foot long too.

I dropped him back off at the pet store after he did a death roll on my blue tang. The tang live through the bite, but wasnt left unscared.
