I have a 45 gl tank that im just starting...I am entertaining the idea of having an eel in there. I was readong that possibly a snowflake eel would work but figured id ask here before looking into it any further?

Would it be ok in 45gl?
Could I have a few othef fish in there?
Would it eat corals if I get any?
Hard to keep?

Thanks!

Specimen dependent. I had a 2 foot one in a 120g that was a model citizen in a tank with an invert buffet. I have heard others will eat anything that will fit in their mouth.

They really need a 55 TBQH.

But if it was the only fish in the tank, with MAYBE something like a single clarkii clownfish it should be okay.

i personally would say ok.

are you going to have a sump? proper filtration? more volume the better for carnivores

other thank mates? probably nothing small. i had a few eels similar to a snowflake. they went up to other fish but never attempted anything. he ate most other inverts. makes usre u have a tight lid for any eel.no small gaps.

I had one in my 140 with cleaner shrimp and they were fine. He never touched anything. I'm actually getting another soon.

They can get 2 feet long, I would say that tank is too small when it reaches adult size.

I dont have a sump,
Currently I have 2 powerheads, a cannister filter, hotb filter, protein skimmer and a heater. And in there is sitting 25lbsof live/baserock. It is an open top though, no lid....eels like to escape?
I should also say that it is a tall 45 not a long one.
Im really new to the hobby and just kindo of want a cool looking fairly easy to keep tank so I mean if it was just an eal and maybe like a chromis or two id be ok with that..but if hes going to try and get out maybe not the best for me?

I wouldn't keep an eel that gets over 2ft in anything less than a 120. After seeing a 2' eel at the store, and considering it for my 90, I just can't see it having a great life in an aquarium that small. So to me, a 45 is way too small. I've also read a lot that they are peaceful but almost all the reviews from personal experience were always that they can be aggressive. I would look at a chesnut or golden dwarf. No top is defintely a no go. Eels will always find a way out, so you have to make sure there are no openings.

Well yea, I think that once it did get full grown I would feel bad with such little swimming space for him. Maybe Ill start with just some cool lookin carnivorous fish or something until I upgrade.

Any suggestions for a 45gl?

Fu Manchus only get around 4 inches, give or take.

A fu Manchu would look great with a dwarf zuzzy lionfish!

You might be able to get a weedy scorpionfish as well.
