Snowflake Moray - 24" - Free

Hi all,

Consolidating my last tank into the 375g today, and still undecided whether to incorporate the moray. He's getting a bit big, and I'm afraid once I put him in this tank he's never coming out. He's not a PROVEN fish eater, just a likely suspect at this point. Give him a good home and he's yours.

C'mon, he's lonely in the QT.

Any fish over 3" should be safe, unless he's a mandarin etc. I had him with damsels, no prob. Itty bitty clownfish, um missing.

Shrimp would be dinner, I fear.

I'm interested but concerned. I have a 150g Fish Only tank I could put him in that has only 4 fish in it. The smallest is a Squareback Anthias (approx 3"), my other concern is feeding. I have never owned an eel and am unfamiliar with the care required. Please let me know what you think.

I also have a Long Horned Cow, he is bigger than the Anthias but slower. Do you think he would pose a threat to the Cow?

The eel is very, very mellow and short sighted.

He is fed with a stick (I use the long handled tongs) and I feed a half shrimp or piece of fish twice weekly. When he's hungry he makes himself very known, otherwise he is pretty inconspicuous.

He recognizes me, and comes out when Im near tank and he's hungry.

The reason I am leery is three-fold.

1) I want to have some anthias, and they are a bit expensive for food. That being said I had damsels, including small green chromis, and they didnt turn up missing.

2) I want to have cleaners, blennies, and a mandarin, all of which are sure-fire food.

3) I have NO idea how big he will get, and if he got to 3 feet I would have a hard time with him. He's two foot now, and kinda skinny, maybe an inch in dia. I have seen larger ones (like at riverhead) so thats got me nervous.

Basically if the fish is mobile and not really, really tiny, I think it's fine. The damsels grab the shrimp of of his mouth and get really close and he's not aggressive. He's also really really shortsighted, so I think even if he wanted to catch a quick fish, he couldn't.

I believe that I can give the eel a wonderfull home. I might have to get some live rock to give him a couple of places to hide out in, but that shouldn't be a problem. When and how would you like to do this?

top of tank should be covered...even with the white plastic square stuff.....it's late and am suffering brain freeze...

if heat is an issue......the tank can still be covered. eels do tend to jump....
