So disaster strikes my tank...

I left at 10am today and didnt get back til about 9:30pm or so, only to find that the fuse blew on the section of my apt where my 125 reef tank is plugged into. All my fish are hiding, but the ones i have cought a glimpse of, they are hyper-ventalating and i lost 1 cleaner skunk so far, which was the biggest lost because he was my first shrimp that i had every bought and was completely full grown :(

Anyways, does anyone have any ideas on how to prevent or safety precautions to avoid this from happening again?

Oh and by the way, for eveyrone who's buying corals, dont worry, they are all fine and are already back to normal.

well if you have fuses a safe bet is to replace it with a breaker panel.
in the mean time you need to find someone with an amp clamp meter to come over and check the load on the circuit. it's more than likely a 15 amp circuit and you are probably close to maxing it out before you turn on a lamp or anything else that may run off that breaker. ceiling fans? other recepticles or whatever. you may need to find another circuit you can split your equipment up on or have a dedicated circuit installed for the tank.

My return for my overflow was blocked by a hermit in a hugh snail shell causing my tank to overflow. I cleaned up the water and went to work. When the timer for the lights truned on it tripped my GFI. The tank was with out power for 7 hrs. I lost a my favorite fish powder blue and a sixline.

Do what robthorn suggested about your electrical. In the mean time get yourself a ups big enough to run your return pump or your power heads to keep the water moving and air exchange.

i agree - get a computer battery backup = thats what i have and just put your 1 pump on it so the battery will last a long time - sorry to hear about your trouble though - try spreading your plugs out to different places until you can get your panel replaced

the only thing is that i live in an apt so any changes in the electrical setup of the complex is prohibited and not cost effective. The battery back up may be a option for me, since i work at a electronic store.
