So how big of a mantis am I looking for?

My TBS has been in a few weeks now. I 've routed out two 1" pistol shimp mistaking their clicking for mantis. I'am not sure I wanted to do that but it happened. I have delt with one 1" mantis (positevely ID'd) it's been bagged and tagged.

I have also seen one more just about an inch. I'am planning to target that one this weekend.

My questions is:

Almost 75% of my barnicles are already toast. Some pretty large ones too. So can a small 1" mantis do that much damage or do I have a larger brute hiding somewhere that I need to be on the look out for? Some of the shells, large ones, are just blown apart and the two mantis I've seen so far are kinda small. Or am I just under estimating the power of the evil mantis?

Well that's good news and bad news.

It's good because, hopefuly, I don't have a monster mantis roaming my tank.

And it's bad news because I have still have at least one 1" little monster roaming my tank.

My TBS was totally encrusted in live barnacles when it arrived. They are an endagered species in my tank now.

But I'll get him.

Thanks

Bax,

Do barnacles live forever in the tank environment? I love mine but I thought that they are short lived?????

They are.....2-3 months at best as they are filter feeders....be sure it is a mantis, as pistol shrimp are good guys!

Richard, is there anything that we can feed our barnacles to keep them alive, or is it futile??

KP

Nope, they need food you cannot supply....and if you do will foul your tank....

I'll have nightmares about that one!

Cearhaill

That looks a tad smaller than the one I've already dispatched and about the size of the one I am searching for. Slippery little buggers! Fast as lightning too!

It's too bad they don't play well with others.

Richard

I've been feding my tank a small amount of cyclopseze (sp.?) and baby brine for the filter feeders (corals, turkey wings, oysters & barnacles) and an anemone. Every one seesm to respond even the barnacles. Is this a really bad idea?
