So I think I want a skimmer on my AP24...

I'm realizing more and more how I like having a skimmer ever since downgrading to my Aquapod. I have the lidded 64W PC model. I have 2 black & white clowns in there and i'm planning on having a decently large bioload, because I like a big community.

I'd like to ditch the sponges which are my only current form of filtration aside from the LR. I like that a skimmer will do a much better job of getting the detritus out of the water, especially since every time I take the sponges out to clean them, I get my hands soaked in poop along with it all releasing into the water column.

So what are my options here? I'm not very handy by any means at all, and I don't want a sump. I'd like to through a coralife super skimmer on there or an AquaC, but I don't think it's possible with the lid.

I'm considering the idea of trying to sell the lid of the AP, and just buying a PC fixture with legs and a HOB skimmer, meanwhile I like the idea of the closed-lid clean look.

Anyone have any ideas for me? What skimmers will actually fit the back chamber of the AP?

boy, as far as I know an aquapod doesn't allow for much by way of HOB add-ons.

It sounded like you were on to something putting a PC light on top and ex-ing the AP hood. It's allow for a more versatile range of add-ons.

I have a 24 aquapod too, I have done some research for an in tank skimmer, there isn't anything out there, at least that I found. There is one skimmer, but it seems most people don't like it. I personally don't want to remove my hood either, as I like the clean look to the tank (and have a 3 year old that would love to stick his hands in there) My best suggestion for you if you're willing to is remove the hood and either create the sump or have a hang on, I believe there is a thread a few pages back with photos of the hang on.

i think the whole point of the pod and the cube is that clean all in one look and removing the hood would kill that. I have heard you can make a HOB skimmer fit if you cut the back of the hood off wherever you want it to hang. Thats what i had to do with my eclipse all in one when i had it up. just my .02

fission nano skimmer is crap...not one good review on it yet....supposedly remora is making a nano style skimmer that will actually work...no E.T.A. as of yet but sometime this summer

Is the remora for in tank though? From what I understood it was a hang on, though I would love it if it was an in tank.

A skimmer removes disolved organics and not detritus. If that's your intention, you should look for another solution.

The fission nano is tough to fit in, it's extremely "water level" sensitive. If you replace the stock pump with a maxi 1200 then the return will help lower the water level in the first compartment. I run a skimmerless Pod 24 and just do small water changes weekly.

Are the sponges even necessary?

I'd rather do more frequent water changes then have to clean the sponges.

Could i do that?

The sponges are not necessary, but, again, if you are concerned about detritus build up and getting into the back chambers, then maybe you should keep them. Otherwise, weekly vacuuming is fine as well or others place a powerhead blowing across the bottom to keep detritus from settling.
