So... I upgraded skimmers and consequently added 10% net volume to my system...

Got tubes?
:D

Hi all!

I grabbed Bill's DNW-200 today. I was planning on buying a new DNW-110 or 150 from Emerald Bay, but when Bill was selling his already modded and ready to go, I thought "Why not? Can't have too big of a skimmer anyway." :D

Well... little did I know how big this beast is! It actually added 5g to my total system volume! For me, thats a 10% increase! That cracked me up. What's really funny is a side-by-side picture with the CSS65 I was using:

Man... needless to say, it was a bit of a challenge to get this thing to fit behind my stand! But I got it. :) Only downside is that my skimmate bucket now sits on top of my ATO bucket, but that's not a huge deal. Only problem is that if I have to get to something back there, I have to move both of those buckets before I can barely fit back there. And I do mean BARELY. :D

I can't wait for this thing to break in. To be honest, its a bit loud for our living room... I guess I probably should have known it would be louder than the CSS65, but its really loud for a living room. I'm thinking I have something not setup right, though, and I think Bill's going to come and help me out with it. So we'll see. If it turns out that it is too loud and I've not done anything goofy, I suppose I'll be getting a 110 or a 150 after all. We'll see, though.

Please ignore how dirty it is behind me tank. :eek2:

I also added it to ReefNook, FWIW, as a part of my setup. :)

We'll see what happens! Hopefully I can get it quiet enough to keep!

I can just see it now...

"Oh, but honey, this thing is really loud and the skimmer is really the biggest expense of getting a bigger tank. We can get this really awesome 120 and I'm sure it will cost less than $(some made up lie of a dollar figure that is always way under what it actually costs) total."

Now quick, hide this post before she sees it...

Brian, it sounds as though you've used this strategy before. :D

And Mark, I have to add a gallon to my water changes for this thing. :D

guess while i was building mine, you shoulda taken me up on that offer to build ya a taller stand after all....since i bet INSIDE a stand, it would be much quieter

LOL

nice upgrade..... you have no reason for any detritus in your tank at all now

lol... Possibly, James. :)

I know, Rick! :) Vodka dosing shouldn't be an issue now, at least as far as skimming goes. ;)

Many, many thanks to Bill! He came all the way over today and helped me to get this thing straightened up. Turns out the pinwheel is off balance or something. We switched it out for the meshmodded wheel and MAN... BIG difference in noise.

Julie gave it the ok before she left for school, so I get to keep it! :D

Again, thanks, Bill, for coming over and helping me with it! I GREATLY appreciate it. I was worried I was going to have to sell it. :)

Glad your wife Is happy and I'm also very happy that It is working soo good already after only two day's re-breakin!! Well their talking Tornado over here so I'll finish up later>

I know! Its already skimming today, too, even after putting the mesh wheel in. It may be a placebo effect, but I truly believe the body to be more milky white now than it was earlier. :) After I get this freaking paper written, I will probably make the stand pipe to go on the skimmer to get some of that air out of the overflow, too. :)

Thanks again, Bill!

I think I've done enough damage for now. :D

What skimmer is that, Mike? Its a slight-bit large. ;)

It's an aerofoamer 830. I bought it used on here a couple of years ago. It is rated for 1000 gal. I think. I have it on my 110. :D

Well, poop... its noisy again. Hmmm... I've got some investigating to do...

At least I know it CAN be quiet. :)

I'll probably take it offline in a bit and start troubleshooting. Hopefully I can figure out what it is...

Wow! That would be quite an upgrade. I would have to extend my neck up to about the height of my entertainment center!
