So its not a Maxima, but what is it?

I just picked this up (vendor WYSIWYG photo) - and I've read all the no such thing as a Maxima in captivity threads - but what do you all think these are? I have a big colony of orange crush/ech and this looks similar - just with way bigger heads. I've had several orange echs over the years. Just an ech on steroids? Either way, it doesn't matter too much - just wondering if anyone has a good guess on what to call it.

Saweeeet! Did you get it from Mike at TCR? He said it kinda looks like a cross between an ech and an acan - I can totally see that in your picture! Do you direct feed it? I was going to put mine in the sandbed.

I posted over in the ID forum a couple of days ago. I have one of those, too.

I wish someone could tell us what we bought. I didn't pay much for it. It is already growing and I've only had it for a couple of weeks.

At first I fed it all the time. It was about the size of a quarter when I first got it. Now I don't feed it at all. It got big fast, but never produced any new polyps. I've had it for over a year now. Its cool. The orange is very intense.

That is not the same coral as the first two. Yours is a Scolymia.

Looks like it could possibly be an acan hillae. Orange would be a pretty unusual color morph for them, but definitely possible. The polyps are a bit bigger than normal sized hillae, but then again look how big some of the aussie acan lord polyps are compared to what we were used to seeing. Very sweet coral for sure. :smokin:

hobogato, yours is a scoly.

where did you order it from

Mine came from The Captive Reef. I believe it is from those Japanese shipments way back when but I can find out.

Here are a couple pix under Phoenix bulbs. Like All Delight said - the orange is very intense. They are also extremely "puffy".

This is the only hillae I have, and they don't really look very similar. Maybe I should have them grow together.

I think that it's one of these Australomussa rowleyensis http://www.liveaquaria.com/diversden/ItemDisplay.cfm?ddid=37041&siteid=20

I don't think they have the right ID on that piece, imo......i've seen an australomussa come in to one of our local shops and there's no mistaking it for something else......looks just like the AIMS pic.....can't say that much for Live Aquaria's

but yeah..what is it?

anyone know much about subechinatas? are their polyps larger/smaller than echinatas?

Zach

For size comparison. This other echinata is kinda shaded in the picture. Its actually extremely bright - but nothing like the new one. You can kinda see how poofy it is, and I just moved him for the pic. Anyway, just a cool coral I guess, who cares about the name. Man does it glow.

Some bad topdowns, water was dusty since I moved the sand. Those toadstools are new also.
