so our tank was vandalized.

I work at the University of San Diego as a lab tech, and we set up two salt water tanks about three months ago for use with one of the professor's animal behavior classes. we've been waiting for the tank to be stable enough to get sea horses (patience is sooo difficult). Well, we finally got two little babies in the tank at the beginning of the week, and some *insert vulgar names here* person decided to take a baseball bat or something of that nature in the middle of the night on thursday and shatter our tank.

i come in at 730 am on friday and find about 4 inches of water left in the tank. we had a pajama cardinal (ramon) in the tank, but he is a pig and eats all the food before the sea horses have a chance, so we moved him to the tank in kayla's office, and the wrasse in her tank was ha-wrassing the the goby so we moved the goby into the sea horse tank. we also decided on wednesday that we would move ALL the coral from kayla's tank into the lounge tank (the one that was shattered) because the hair algae was attacking them.

heres our lovely peppermint shrimp being happy as can be cleaning my fingers.

AND THEN TRAGEDY STRIKES.

somehow the sea horses survived. i was positive they would be dead. but they were spared.
and since the wrasse and Ramon cant be in the tank with the sea horses, we put them aside for a little while while we moved all the creatures from the shattered tank into kayla's tank. and now the wrasse is in shock and we are hoping he pulls through. so ironic that by shattering one tank the fish that werent even in that tank are dying. we are missing a shrimp, have not found a body yet....

and obviously all the coral that we just moved into that tank was out of water for 5+ hours.

however, in other news, there is an acan that hitchhiked on our live rock when we bought it, literally didnt see it until it fell off, it looked completely dead, and somehow came back to life when we set up the tank. that acan is at the very top of our rock, thus out the longest, and looks like nothing happened to it. it doesnt die. we now call it the fake-an, because it clearly cant be real.

so, i thought i would share as we are both absolutely livid.

I'm sorry for your loss. My curiosity is killing me though, and so I have to ask. What IS the thing in the right side of the pictures that looks as though it started the crack?

OMG.. I am so sorry to hear and see that. I'm glad you were at least able to save the sea horses. Some people don't deserve to live. I really can't believe college kids would do that. What a waste of a life!

which thing specifically ? the bottom part of the crack is more inward than the top part, which i guess is where they hit it

we cant believe it either. even if someone was really mad i dont understand what someone would gain from doing such a thing

There is a yellow and black thing on the right side of the tank, on the actual side of the tank that looks to me like it initiated the crack... pictures are hard though. I just wondered what it was... looks disc shaped...

oh yeah the reflections make it really difficult to see- its actually a power cord to something !

Sorry to see this but I will tell you those straight and minimal cracks look like tank failure

which straight ones ? what would cause tank failure like this if it was ? the reason we are pretty sure the tank was purposely hit is because the bottom part of the cracked glass is angled in.

the tank is still under warranty i am pretty sure, so if it was tank failure that would make me hate humanity a lot less, and the department wouldnt be out 400 more dollars

It might be a stress failure. It appears to have initiated at the front panel where the lines intersect and then propagated out. It actually jumped across glass planes at the corner. I suspect the front glass pushed out and then it pulled the side panel in like a hinge.

Or is was bumped by some hard sharp object that caused the crack to start. It could be a baseball bat but I doubt it.

I say straight cause in the means of breaking a tank there clean breaks you couldn't break it like that if you tried

Big Bummer..

Email your pics to the tank manufacture and just tell them that's how you found it let them evaluate it. I would email pics to another manufacture too and see if you can get an unbiased second opinion.

If I was hit with something bat like I'm thinking there would be crushed or small chips at the point of impact.

Good luck.

I'm in agreement with the tank failure theory. If that tank was hit on purpose with a swing of an object, I think the impact on glass would have done more than cause a crack. Doesn't change the disappoint but maybe can renew your faith in mankind somewhat. Sorry for the losses.

Sorry to hear this happened.

It's hard to tell without seeing it in person, but that Looks like a tank failure to me.

I have no training or experience, but I'd guess tank failure as well just from looking at it.. What brand of tank is that? I noticed it's rimless, did it come like that from the manufacturer, or was the rim removed? How thick is the glass?

Nonetheless, sorry for your loss.
