So what do you guys think doable or insane?

Okay so a store near me has 2 S. gigantea that I have been watching very closely for the past week and a half and it is so tempting not to think about setting up a specific tank for one of them.

So here is my plan.....

I want to plumb a 30 gallon into my existing 70 total water volume tank that has been setup for 6 years. The tank has very stable and pristine water conditions. This 30 i would dedicate to a gigantea that is 6-7inches in diameter.

For Lighting I would place the gigantea no more than 10 inches away from the surface of the water and I would light the tank with a 70 watt double ended metal halide, supplemented with 2-4 power brite leds made by current.

these guys:

now before you write me off, these guys produce very impressive par I mean very impressive, even at depth in the tank, The store I work at has had these on a tank full of LPS as the main source of lighting and they have burned their corals with them.

I would not be getting into this on a whim I have and will continue to do research on these nems. I would just like your honest opinions (constructive critique only please). What are some of the pitfalls with taking on this endeavor? Would the tank just be physically too small for the nem shortly?

Also, these nems are doing well getting more sticky every day with tight mouths, they do however shrink up on occasion at night? Do you know what causes this? How is this remedied? Also, the nems have accepted food, but now seem not to because, the clowns in them pull it out all the time, Are the clowns doing more harm than good?

I realize this is a slew of questions, but I am really interested and want to be well informed whether this is doable or you think I should scrap it.

Thank you all very much in advance
Chris

Dude, a 30 gallon is way too small. You need something at least 24" in width. That size will buy you a year or two time. What were you planning for flow?

I have seen them in small tanks and have done fine and plumbing the tank into you main tank is smart in order to keep water stable. I would do a 150 de over a 70 de. and I think the leds are pretty strong but im still not buying that there that powerful.
Also anenomes inflate and de-flate its quite common

I am planning to use korallia 4's at least 2. Should I use 3 or 4?

E.J. Coral you spoke of a 30 gallon cube? How big is it? Who makes it? Is it custom?

thank you all for your input keep it coming,

Thanks
Chris

I didn't mention a 30 cube, slakker did.

30 gallons is way too small unless it is a 12" tall tank or something. I have one in my 60 cube (24x24x24) right now that is 18" in the longest direction, and I am upgrading to accomidate it right now. Plus with an anemone that size in a tank as small as the one suggested, getting good SAFE flow with powerheads will be challenging to say the least!!! It's all in the name, S. giantea, kinda like gigantic ....

A cool, but more feasible idea would be to plumb a 30 gallon cube into your system. Make it sand only...like 8" DSB and get a S. Haddoni carpet.... that would be cool. Then you could get away with a 70w DE and wouldn't need as much flow...

So how much flow are we talking here for a gigantea, a torrent? How do you know when you've provided adequate flow,

thanks,
Chris

Hard to say because I haveonly kept 1 gigantea. My curent system has 5000gph in a 60 cube .... my new 100g system will have 7000gph.... Rod Beuhler(?) who has had the most success on this board (16 years in captivity!!!) uses surge tanks for flow....
