So who has a clown tang?

After having a small one for about 2 days before it disappeared, I decided to try one more time.

After a good month in my nano, I got him to start eating frozen food and sheet algea and added him to the tank.

he was a bit shy at first but is now growing into the reputation for being a jackass:D he is only 2" now and the smallest tang in the tank and routinly chases the other fish away from the algea clip. Even the ones that are 2x his size.

I cant get a good shot of him since he is so fast, but he is a beauty and fattening up nicely.

So who else has one and how do you like them?

Gave it back to LFS. If they live they can be a holy terror. Never had a fish that bothered every single fish in the tank.

I knew what I was getting into when I got him. He isnt going anywhere till I absolutly have to.

Im hoping a constant supply of food will help the aggression, but if it comes to it he will be easy to catch. He will already swim into my hand to get food.

how big was yours?

4-5" Feeding all the time didn't help. He just got fatter. Too bad, that was an awesome looking Maldives clown tang.

yeah if I hadent left this one alone in a nano for a while im sure he wouldnt have made it either.

What size did you get? The only ones ive seen available are less then 2"

Tagging along. I am probably going to get one that is I think 5-6" already.

Does tank size matter with aggression? Also, do they seem to pick on the more passive fish or are they equal opportunity meanies? The reason I ask is, I have purposely stocked my tank, so far, with fish that can hold their own. No passive fish, but none that are aggressive, either.

I have a yellow tail damsel (no problems with him AT ALL), Purple Tang, Yellow Tang, Regal Tang, and a pair of Percula Clowns. There's a watchman goby somewhere, too, but I've only seen him once. LOL

Thoughts on this? Oh, and it's a 6' 220g tank. 72x24x30high

i had one. bought it skinny and weak. it ate mysis, but i forgot to feed nori as well. would have helped, but now its gone. :(

I personally wouldn't try one in anything short of 600 gallons, they get large and mean. Eventually they will kill all your other tangs and maybe other fish, if they do live, which is unlikely.

yeah I would agree, the only reason I got one is because I have a friend building a 1200g who wants one bad. I told him he could have it when it gets to big for me.

but much of my experiance with tangs is getting them small and trading them out when they out grow my tank.

I don't particularly like the idea of getting a fish I know I will have to rehome. (not flaming, though!) :(

i bought a 3 inch one yesterday...i have a 240 reef...it looks hyperactive..hopefully it will last...feedin nori.

why so? Ive gone through at least 10 tangs so far, and all are still doing fine in larger homes, aside from one that jumped out.

Id much rather get a fish knowing he has a place to go when he gets big. Rather then have a 12"+ swimmer in a 6' or 8' tank. I mean I understand not wanting to have to catch the fish out of the tank, but thats what fish traps are for :)

My uncle has one that is about 6 inches in his 90g reef. You guys will never believe this because it is so unlikely but he was one of the first fish in the tank and he has not bothered anybody in that tank even the new additions. It is a great looking tang. Fat and very healthy.

Drawing from my experience raising and training horses, I would suggest having the fish gelded while it is still in quarantine. That can do wonders for the attitude.

Could you expand on this?
