who uses a sock filter and Why? i was thinking of adding a sock to my overflow outlet to try and make the water clearer (less particulate ). not sure how it all works?

It will help catch debris the only thing with them is that you have to make sure that you clean them often. you can run carbon in them also to help polish the water I believe

so change them often--one would not use a sock 24/7 or would they? how would a sock effect pods from coming and going?

Most people claim that they should be cleaned or swapped out every 3 days. They come in 100 and 200 micron sizes. The 100 is considered a water polisher.
If your going to use them, buy at least 2 to 4 so swapping with a clean one is easy.
I do wash mine is a washing machine with bleach only and rinse twice. I was scared to try this but I've seen no ill effects.
It's been in the single digits around here and going outside to use the water hose isn't an option.

I run one on my 75 gallon reef, the amount of micro-bubbles it cuts down is all worth the effort in cleaning it every couple of days. My sump doesn't have baffles so that was definitely an issue.

It does catch a lot of pods and other fauna, so do keep that in mine. For cleaning, I rinse it with a hose well enough to get the dirt off, then I pop it in the washer and do an extra rinse-cycle afterwards. Then, I let it air dry. Some, as have I, will even add a small splash of bleach to help clean/whiten it. Just be sure to take extra measures in allowing the bleach to be removed before you return the filter sock to your sump.

I use one at the end of my overflow inlet. I only have a couple of visible pods in them when I change them out. I have a sponge in the overflow box, so that probably helps.

I have a handful. I put a new one in every 2-4 days. Every couple of weeks I wash them in the washing machine. I run it empty with hot water, then run the filter socks with hot water 2 times. I personally don't use bleach to clean them, but some people do.

Yeesh. It's a balmy 20 degrees here! Though, I did just hear my garbage cans blow down the street a minute ago.
